Angel by Mugler is an oriental vanilla fragrance for women. Launched in 1992, this composition was created by Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chiris. Alright… Angel. I’ve been wearing A*Men for 15 years, so I have an opinion. Mugler’s Angel, I’d define as a total gourmand with a fairly complex structure: top, heart, and base. Some people define a perfume with several olfactive notes, and it happens that the more you know, like with wine or coffee, the better you can distinguish them. Honestly, not everyone is prepared to identify so many notes. In my view, the perfume is both simple and complex. The notes I detect with my experience are: Top, a blend of fruits with lots of honey. Heart, caramelised flowers with coconut. Base, an amber vanilla accompanied by patchouli, chocolatey, and a persistent but subtle caramel. There’s something that makes it feel warm and spicy; I’m not sure if it’s the tonka bean or the musk, but it definitely feels that way. Mugler, for me, is a perfume that gives security and elegance; it’s timeless. It’s not like those fragrances launched years ago that feel old; Mugler has managed to redefine what an eternal and ethereal fragrance is. Unfortunately, there was a reformulation: I had bottles with ‘THIERRY MUGLER’ and now the ones that just say ‘MUGLER’. The good thing is that it still respects its original scent, but it no longer has the same trail or longevity… It’s a pity. If you want to be different and stand out, choose Angel, just test it first, let it go through all its processes, and enjoy each one.
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I tested it at Fraiche and, yes, I liked it a little, though it smelled strongly of patchouli and wet earthy mould. I wanted to enjoy the vanilla, caramel, and cotton notes, so I bought the original, only for it to smell like everything except what I imagined. I thought it would be like Jungle Elephant, but it’s nothing like it. I feel a bit sad; I wish I’d made another decision. Maybe I’ll feel differently tomorrow, but for now, I didn’t like it at all. It’s very strange: in the end, it feels rich like caramel, vanilla, and patchouli, but when you first spray it, it’s unbearable and lasts only 20 minutes. Afterwards, I feel it doesn’t smell at all. I’m not sure what’s true; this isn’t what I expected, but I’ll give it another chance; I’ll update my review if it changes.
I had very high expectations and was quite let down. It’s a filthy, earthy perfume with loads of patchouli. For me, it’s a resounding no. That said, if you enjoy its scent, the trail and longevity are excellent.
It smells invasively of patchouli and gives me a headache. I noticed a faint hint of honey, but I don’t like it. It feels masculine, yet no man would find it attractive, and it lacks any feminine or universal unisex appeal. It’s one-note, just smelling of patchouli, which I dislike. It’s not worth the price.
I had high expectations; I always wanted it, but it let me down. It’s very invasive; what you feel most is a cloying honey that you can even taste in your mouth, saturating you instantly. It has great longevity and a nice trail, but it’s far too much for me.
How impatient people are! Most say the same thing: it smells awful and they’re disappointed, so they stopped trying it. I’m sure most of them washed it off with soap and water. To truly appreciate a fragrance and know if you like it, you need plenty of patience.
Absolutely dreadful. The formulation is terrible, like mixing coloured playdough and ending up with a grey ball; literally, it just smells of patchouli. Unfortunately, it has the most potent projection and trail I’ve ever encountered. You can’t be patient with it because the scent never evolves.
It’s the worst perfume I’ve ever smelled. It smells like everything unpleasant to me… utterly terrible.
I don’t like it at all. I was given a tester at Duni and, oh dear. It’s a very strong and invasive fragrance. It does last, but it’s not for me. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, especially not at this price, given the sheer disappointment it causes.
OK, I rushed to write this review, some time has passed and it smells very good; honestly, I think I can use it, I just have to adapt it to my nose. I can’t delete my previous comment, but if those were my first impressions, now I’m more at ease and actually I am starting to like it. Oh, what a relief because it wasn’t cheap. It’s been almost a month and Mancero too, I don’t know what Carambas it smells like, but they say everything resembles its owner and since I’m unbearable, I suppose the perfume had to be too, but well, ha ha. Honestly yes, I’m going to finish it, because I’m going to finish it no matter how, but it smells sweeter to me now. I quote: it’s a win-win.
I gave it many chances, but it simply doesn’t work for me. It smells overwhelmingly of olive with a sour edge; I can’t detect a single promised note.
Never has a perfume kept me so confused… at first it’s a dislike, then, as hours pass, it feels sweeter, softer, and friendlier. You need courage to wear it. I can’t say I don’t like it; there’s something that keeps me wanting it.
On paper, I didn’t like it, and well, it must please me in some way to catch my attention. I also tried Nova, and despite being more acceptable, I still feel it’s common.
It’s going to give me a heart attack no matter how much I want to; my opinion on this perfume keeps changing. Right now, the only thing I detect is patchouli and vanilla. I like it more, yes, I definitely tolerate it now, I endure it, it leaves me a little happier, but it’s still complicated. Oh, I don’t know how much longer until he and I can be good friends, ha ha ha.
You either love it or hate it. I’ve noticed many people voted ‘don’t like’. I think indifference doesn’t leave you. A priori, I’m one of those who doesn’t like it; it smells to me like a blaring spice from an Indian dish that you know will upset your stomach just by smelling it (and I quite like Indian food, but there are things that notably disgust me). Like an Indian spice sauce. Perhaps a chutney. That would make sense of all those supposed fruit notes. But I don’t detect any sweetness or fruitiness, only a spicy note that I dislike. This perfume has many notes and I think it depends on your skin, your pH, the specific day; certain notes can be highlighted and vary the experience quite a bit. I will try it again.
Yes, I like it, but it reminds me of an auntie who wears it. Also, I sprayed it on my arm yesterday, took a shower, and it’s been a whole day yet it’s still there. Personally, I detect a very sweet patchouli; it’s rich, but I wouldn’t wear it.
I find it incredible that I say this, but I’ve absolutely loved it 🤣🤣. I hated it at first, but time has passed and my nose is more trained; I’m getting more and more ‘Muglerised’. Although it’s extremely well-known, it’s a totally outrageous and fun scent. On the opening, it smells ultra-mentholated and patchouly. As it dries down, what I detect most is honey, cotton candy, and a hint of anise. You have to dose it carefully to avoid a headache, but it’s a pleasure to appreciate this beautiful and groundbreaking creation.
My story with this perfume: A friend used it years ago; when she applied it in front of me, I asked to smell it directly from the bottle, but my nose rejected it immediately, smelling like armpit sweat 😅. It was an ageless perfume for back then (I was wearing florals like Amarige or Tréssor…). Years passed and I recently received a sample of Angel as a gift. When I smelled it with suspicion, magic emerged 💫; it seemed interesting, perhaps my sense of smell has matured to understand it. I decided to take the risk and buy the large 100 ml presentation. Every time I use it, something typical of Mugler happens: I feel they are from another world, special, rare, eccentric, mysterious, and unique, just like with Alien and Aura. I definitely love their bottles! 😍 Note: they say Angel was the first gourmand perfume, I don’t feel that way, but it’s a great creation by Olivier Cresp with bestial longevity. In summary: I hated it and now I love it! ❤️
I didn’t like it :(. I get the impression it smells like a lady, but not a nice, elegant one.
It took me several months, but now I can confirm it’s a delicious, rich perfume. The notes of cotton candy, coconut, vanilla, jasmine, and patchouli are clearly detectable, even the peach, and it has turned out wonderfully. I’m clarifying that this is months after my first spray; I’m not sure if my nose needed time to adjust or if I’ve simply built a tolerance, but now I definitely like it quite a lot.
I don’t know what’s happening with this perfume; it’s one I love and adore, I’ve been using it for 2 years since I fell in love with it, but lately the new batches I’m trying smell disgusting. It didn’t smell this bad before; I no longer feel the sweet notes, the chocolate, the fruits, just a very dense and dirty patchouli, and a bitter honey that makes it smell old, like something from years ago. My mum tried it and even she said it smelled horrible. Angel always gives me compliments; I have a bottle from the 2022 batch and that one still smells incredible, but the new batches I’ve tried smell too badly; no one gives compliments, as if they went too far with the patchouli. I don’t know if it’s bad luck, but it’s a pity because it was my favourite. I got excited buying a large 100ml bottle from 2024; at first I didn’t notice, but after smelling it several times, I liked it less. It’s sad to know that one of the world’s prettiest perfumes has been ruined. I compared it with a 10ml travelsize from the 2023 batch and it smells just as bad. I think they changed it from 2023 onwards, because it doesn’t feel like the same perfume anymore; it seems like a bad imitation. It really saddens me because Angel was never a bad perfume; it’s just that some people like it more, but these new batches smell very badly.
Juasier216, I think we have the same batch and I share your feeling; it smells like pure patchouli to me. I bought it in a fragrance group and apart from testers, I went to an official store and it’s the same: green, pasty. I thought it was already rancid, but no, my skin with the new formula didn’t click. But in the dry down, it does reach smelling like rich chocolate with coconut. I don’t know what’s going on, what a pity; try on skin before buying the new formulas.
I had been wanting to try it for months because of the notes, dreaming of that cloying sweetness of the cotton candy and the fruity notes, but I was very disappointed when I tried it on my skin. I couldn’t distinguish any note, just a strong smell of detergent. The Nova version is closer to what I thought it would smell like; luckily I didn’t buy it blindly u.u
Angel ceased to be Angel with the packaging change back in 2008, where it said Thierry Mugler and changed to MUGLER, and we lost this great perfume forever. The reformulation was so bad that not even L’Oreal could make it worse. We could gather signatures for Mercadona to relaunch Codizia.
I tested it in a perfumerie and reading the notes on Fragrantica almost gave me a heart attack. I think I live in an alternate reality because cotton candy, honey, chocolate, and coconut… I imagine they are perceived via Bluetooth, because what a surprise. I knew nothing about the perfume, only the star-shaped bottle, and the tester sparked my curiosity. I gave it a swipe on the strips (thank goodness, because I would have suffered if I sprayed it). The first impression was unpleasant and discouraging. The first thing was a strong smell of herbs, a nasty patchouli fused with a pine cleaner. I don’t know if there are pleasant cleaners, but not even that. The smell was horrific, like those 1L bottles of herbal or lemon water that ladies use before going to mass. Minutes passed and the heart still felt terrible; it evolved into a mentholated scent, like the worst spearmint I’ve ever smelled. In summary, this is not a sweet gourmand perfume (even though the notes say otherwise). With great kindness, it has an unbearable patchouli smell with herbs and menthol. I hope it never becomes my weakness, because I wouldn’t recognise myself.
It’s a complicated perfume. I find it eccentric and tender at the same time. It’s powerful yet friendly. It transports me to childhood; I smell it and my brain says it’s Christmas and that gifts are being brought, haha, I’d probably use it then, like an auntie. At first, it didn’t convince me; it seemed very strong, like chemical melon, but an hour later on my wrist, I liked it too much. I feel the cotton candy and mentholated, earthy patchouli that makes me think of a rainy day, but it’s so creamy it gives a sensation of warm cuddling. It has a very strange, sparkling magic that attracts me; it’s cheerful, original, and has a strong character. The notes I feel most are honey, cotton candy (or burnt sugar), amber, and patchouli. I wouldn’t use it in the heat, haha, but I imagine it for grey winter days to lift my spirits. Edit: I love it, haha, it tastes so good when it’s fresh. How well the name fits; I feel it like an angel accompanying and caring for you, a kind presence but with power and that air from another world.
I tested it at Ulta Beauty, gave it a swipe on my wrist, and the opening was horrible; I didn’t even want to keep smelling it. It’s too strange, it smells like sweat or rancid liquids. I understand that the concept of Angel is supernatural and otherworldly, but I don’t think an Angel should smell like that. 🤨
Angel, my dear Angel, you are as beautiful as you are hated. The opening is greenish, it becomes powdery, and finally, with that patchouli and Mugler seal. On my skin, it’s somewhat talc-like, not sweet but herbal with lots of bitter chocolate. Don’t expect compliments because it’s not for everyone; they told me it smells like old-fashioned talcum powder (which is nothing like it). In terms of longevity, the Thierry version is a beast in every sense. It makes you feel mysterious and desired, because not everyone smells like this (at least in Mexico). I recommend it for fresh days and evenings, or during the day with a little bit of warmth.
My personal signature perfume from 1999 to 2016. Since it left the Clarins group it has been sinking… A year ago I refilled my star and perceived that the chocolate note no longer exists and almost no honey; the milky notes from the middle have been halved and that sensual essence that lasted 10 hours is gone. In the new formulation is there some coconut? The raspberry is still noticeable with lots of vanilla and the patchouli is perceived like nail polish. Approximate longevity 3 hours, perhaps 6 or 7 on clothes. Nothing like the old Thierry Mugler. I’ve found a clone that does last 8 hours and the old formula, without coconut, very similar to the body oil and hair mist which were wonderful. RIP Angel 2025!
Don’t be alarmed by the initial scent; it smells like insecticide. But over time on the skin, it undergoes an amazing transformation. It’s exquisite, never the same, something that never happened with another perfume before. It’s a real winner, a one-of-a-kind fragrance.
I finally got it in 2025. I tested a 25ml sample to see if it would take… and zass, chocolate with praline, cocoa, coconut, and something magical. What a powerhouse, goodness me, it won’t go anywhere and the Angel takes over. What a perfume, what a rush. It’s not for everyone; it’s original and out of this world. If you can’t handle the strength, don’t buy it, but do try it because it doesn’t suit everyone, but it does for me (in winter or cold weather).
I tried it in the perfumerie and literally felt a goat smell. I washed my arm twice and it wouldn’t go away. I have the Angel Elixir which is beautiful, but I wish it had that same longevity as the classic.
Angel… what an extra-sensory work of art; I’m a total fan since 2019. I’m reviewing it again because it’s a new year and this scent, beyond being my personal signature, enhances my festive seasons. As I write, I smell the bottle: years pass and I keep refilling bottles; I can’t let go, it’s my iconic scent. It’s a dimensional portal; I feel the 90s or 2050, with no middle ground. I understand this sense of time and space comes from my chronic anxiety and the sheer number of notes; it’s unique. I understand the negative reviews; it’s perfect. Since 1992 it was created for complex, atypical and rare noses. I’m grateful not everyone likes it; it was never for low personalities; it lets others know the elevated vibe one has thanks to the resinous and sweet notes. My circle knows I’m wearing it and they always come close to my neck; it must be that my vibe creates chemistry with these notes. Recommendations: use it at night after 6 pm; it’s not for daytime. In summer, use it moderately unless it’s the EDT. For people over 30. In winter it goes with everything; at night it creates magic like having a glass of wine with chocolate and friends. High personality, guaranteed character and no fear of success; literally it’s an Angel accompanying you.
OMG! Recently my mum gifted me Angel. For a few months now I’ve loved strong perfumes with character and a bit of ‘mature’ flair. I’ve seen many reviews saying it smells like a patchouli bomb, like a man, like cat pee or a funeral, but they just don’t know how to wear it. At first it smells super strong, like a men’s perfume, mentholated and mega green; but as it dries down, that iconic sweetness emerges. It has a trick: if you don’t hydrate your skin, it smells disgusting, but if you do, it smells sweet and delicious. On me it smells between burnt caramel, mega dark chocolate, strong vanilla, sweet patchouli and jasmine. Obviously it doesn’t smell the same to everyone. On me it lasts 10-13 hours and the patchouli stands out; on my mum it smells sweeter and lasts less. It’s a very rich perfume; you need to know how to wear it. If you want compliments from ladies and to smell rich with character, use it!!!
I don’t know what kind of nose those 12,000 people have who love it, honestly. It smells like urine from someone you pass on the corner who’s been peeing there every day for years, almost 🤮. Where’s the gourmand aspect???? It should be called Angel Earthy Dirty Patchouli 🤮🤮🤮.
I’ve had it for over a year and used it little, but it’s not that I ‘don’t’ like it; I just can’t find the special occasion to wear it as it deserves. It’s one of those fragrances to attract attention in a strange way. I think a Hollywood star would wear it at a fruit-aero-space themed Met Gala; it would be perfect there. I don’t feel it’s for the office, daily wear or dinner. It’s a gem you must own because the perfect day might come. Not everyone travels to space every day, only a few and sometimes in life. ☾✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧⁺₊ ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧
Honestly, it’s one of the most unpleasant perfumes I’ve tried. I was curious about its notes, but on my skin, which highlights the patchouli, it comes off horribly. The opening is unbearable; I had to wash my hands several times. Afterwards, it wasn’t that stinging smell (which many describe as cat pee), but something mentholated, earthy and more digestible. On my skin, I didn’t sense the sweet accord or the rest, just a strong, unpleasant patchouli. I have no doubt it suits others, but it’s not for me.
I’ve just received this wonder and the excitement is immense. It’s different from everything else, original and rebellious. Tremendously disruptive despite being 35 years old. I can’t talk about longevity yet as I sprayed it an hour ago, but I’m crazy about its projection and trail. It’s worthy of someone with strong personality who demands a trained nose. Distinct from any commercial scent, suitable for men or women, day or night, except in extreme heat. This Mugler is perfect for me. I bought it blind because I had the Cuba Paris New York (a very well-made dupe) on promotion. I wasn’t wrong. ☺️
When I started in perfumery with a novice nose, I HATED this perfume as my favourites were sweet scents. Now with more experience, I say Mugler’s Angel is a gem. If you give it a chance, you discover the opening is potent, almost mentholated and pushes you away, but it softens gradually. Notes of fruit, honey, cotton candy, dark chocolate and a dirty but sexy patchouli emerge. It’s not for everyone; it’s UNIQUE, different, sexy, imposing, almost carnal, a misunderstood work of art.
I’m a man who’s been smelling this since I was a child; it used to overwhelm me, but after turning 30, it’s one of the sexiest fragrances out there. Potent, striking and mysterious, it smells of licorice caramel with lots of synthetic patchouli. No princesses here; it’s for a mature, confident woman with Femme Fatale vibes.
