They say the person who named this perfume burst out laughing during the tasting. Like a medieval monk drawing elephants from hearsay, they decided to call it something caramel-like, nothing to do with violets; either they were lost or a bit of a pervert. Here we go (drums roll)… another Baccarat Rouge! What joy and what fuss. It smells like a dentist’s waiting room, but at least it doesn’t shout as much. I dared to spray it fearlessly to review it properly (yes, I sacrifice myself for those who will read it), and out of all the clones and inspirations of the 2020s, this is the least offensive. Saffron, wood, and a very soft suede are the notes I detect, which have little to do with the declared pyramid. In conclusion: if we want violet caramels, we have Celeste by GdT (a masterpiece, so often misunderstood). But for a BR540-inspired scent that isn’t so harrying, I’d bet on this New Notes.
I had a decant and would say I could consider buying it in a large bottle. It is a fragrance of sugared, almost candied violets, very fitting for the name. The opening has a slight acidity from the orange, which I perceive more as sanguine. The violets, and also in the heart, seem accompanied by an almond touch, as if the flowers were bathed in almond oil. The dry down is what I like least; it reminds me a bit of BR540, but without the burnt sugar, just an amber hint, slightly salty, with wood that makes me think of BR540. Perhaps the sugarcane in the heart notes contributes to that similarity, but I don’t think so, or at least I don’t feel it that way. It has good longevity, more than eight hours on me, and an impressive trail. As I’ve already said, I think I could buy the large bottle; if I end up doing so, I will update this review.
