It’s not a perfume, it’s Lush’s conditioner. I bought it when I was an Au Pair in 2020, aged 23, and fell in love with that spiced scent I couldn’t identify at the time: tonka bean. Since then, it’s my obsession. I adore washing my hair in winter and stepping into warm places; the heat awakens the spice, making me feel comfortable, calm, happy and luxurious. It clings to my wool coat. As autumn and winter are cold and solitary, I use tricks to avoid my body hibernating. Tonka bean is one of them, alongside musk. It awakens the magic of this mysterious season that forces you to get to know yourself better by turning your attention inward. Musk is for everyday wear in conservative settings; tonka bean, which to me is caramelised musk, is for festive and cheerful occasions.
