To cut to the chase: it’s 60% Aramis plus 40% Oscar Pour Lui and you have Caractere, period. The trail and longevity are average, but it smells wonderful and brings back memories.
Sweet, fresh incense following that wave of classic notes, with castoreum upfront. Then comes an aldehydic, coniferous, and mentholated accord. Despite this, it feels very modern; a luxury brand would gift it without hesitation. A beautiful scent.
They gifted me this in 1990 when I was distributing chocolates in Madrid and had to visit perfume offices. There were only girls there, and when I handed out the sweets, they gave me a bottle of Caractere. It lasted me years and was my favourite fragrance. I know nothing about notes, but years later my wife gifted it to me again. Smelling it, I was transported back in time by more than 30 years; incredible. I only wear it for special occasions; it is very much of the 90s.
Lately, I’ve been seeking forgotten perfumes, remnants of a bygone era: ultra-masculine, serious, soapy… true ‘men’s perfumes’. I’d never heard of Daniel Hechter, but I found an exquisite woody fragrance with oakmoss as the star, alongside geranium, leather, and cedar. The best part is when it dries: those delicious bursts where you catch that rare coconut note. If you like One Man Show, this follows the same path but, in my opinion, it is better.
They gifted me this in the early 90s, and now a sample allows me to return to this dark-cut fragrance, less intense and sweeter than Van Cleef Pour Homme. Typical of the era but with discretion and softness. To my taste, it is pleasant; I have rediscovered appreciation for that kind of stately aroma, with soft projection and discreet longevity. The curious thing is how they remain in memory: you smell them after many years and they are still there, as if you left them yesterday.
