I’ve just added it to my collection; it’s a blend of Petite Chérie and Grand Amour. At first, it smells of sweet pear (more intense than the Petite), but within seconds the Turkish rose emerges, dominating the scent and pushing the pear into the background. The base doesn’t win me over; on my skin, the rose fades and turns into honey (I’m not sure if it’s officially listed, as this perfume has many secrets, but I swear it smells like that).

This Night or Never: there are loves that arrive late, and that’s what happened with this beauty. There is no after with this tender, natural aroma; you either live it now or perhaps it will be too late tomorrow. It begins with an avalanche of roses, then a garden of very tender flowers appears, until citrus leaves adorn the whole composition. It’s a dream perfume, but its beauty doesn’t last long, just like youth. Another time would have been my favourite, but it isn’t anymore.
Ce Soir ou Jamais (This Night or Never). There are loves that arrive late, and so it was with this olfactory beauty that bears a name worthy of its fragrance. There is no ‘after’ with this tender, natural scent; you live it now or perhaps tomorrow will be too late. Its scent begins with an avalanche of roses and over time a garden full of other very tender flowers appears, until a scent of citrus leaves adorning the ensemble is perceived. It’s a dream perfume, but its beauty doesn’t last long, just like youth. A scent that in another era would have been one of my favourites, but no longer.
‘This Night or Never’ is a beautiful phrase with a strong emotional impact. It’s no surprise Annick worked on this essence for over 10 years, the scent she dreamed of since childhood: the union of pear and rose. Isabelle Doyen even visited her in her final months of life so this dream could come true. The phrase and the emotional weight surprised me. Upon application, a juicy, metallic, rich pear reveals a glimpse of powdery rose with green tints. It’s a red rose growing strong in this fruit-floral metamorphosis; the fruit’s sweetness never leaves. The green tints make us feel the leaf, the stem, the calyx. Only here, at that green point, does it compare to Perfumer’s Workshop’s Tea Rose from the 70s. Then, the green notes settle and the fruity rose gains oriental touches; the ambrette and amber sparkle and the magic intensifies. The ambrette gives that sensation of red Turkish Rose, full of nuances, with wine tints, intoxicating and seductive, sometimes vintage. The amber provides the necessary warmth. This EDT lasts just enough; watching its stages is mysterious and fun. For rose lovers, I totally recommend this. Life is like this: now or never.
On first sniff, I thought ‘rustic’, but of a bygone era, bucolic. I imagine Jane Austen wearing Ce Soir ou Jamais; the name doesn’t fit that initial explosion of pear which then gives way to wild roses, with stem, leaves, and thorns. It reminded me of the scented sachets my grandmother kept in her drawers that I adored. It’s like a box of carefully pressed and stored flowers. Utterly feminine, delicate, and very Goutal: a simple, pretty fragrance, like a classic cologne but with better longevity, sillage, and a price that’s gone mad.
“Campestre” was the first word that came to mind when I smelled it, but not just any countryside—something bucolic and from another era. I can picture the heroines of Jane Austen wearing this, with an initial burst of pear followed by wild roses complete with stems, leaves, and thorns. It also reminded me of the scented sachets my grandmother used to keep in her drawers, which I adored. It’s a supremely feminine, delicate fragrance, very Goutal: simple and lovely, like a classic eau de cologne but with better longevity, sillage, and a price that’s simply outrageous.
I loved smelling it on the blotter, but when I sprayed it on my skin, I didn’t like it at all. The hibiscus was very prominent, and only after many hours did I find something resembling the blotter scent. I tested it on a friend, and on her skin it smelled wonderful, like a bouquet of fresh roses. What a pity we didn’t get along… I let it go because it didn’t suit me. In its place came Le Chevrefeuille, which I’m just getting to know but already love it a lot.
I loved smelling it on the blotter, but when sprayed on my skin, nothing… The hibiscus dominated everything and it took hours to notice anything resembling the box description. I tried it on a friend and on her skin it was divine; that’s when I understood why they recommended it as a fresh rose. What a pity we didn’t get along… I stopped wearing it because I didn’t like it on me. Now I have Le Chevrefeuille, which I’m loving a treat!
Ce soir ou jamais is quite intense. On the skin, it smells of freshly wet roses. Over time, it evolves into something fruity and juicy with a touch of talc. The darkened rose lingers all day without being overpowering. I must confess, I adore it just as much for its scent as for its name: ‘This Night or Never’.
Ce Soir ou Jamais is quite brutal. Upon touching the skin, it smells of dew-drenched roses. Over time, it evolves into something fruity and juicy with a touch of talc. The darkening rose stays well-fixed without being overwhelming. I confess that for me, it’s not just the scent, but the name: ‘This Night or Never’…
