Nuit Etoilee by Goutal is an aromatic woody fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2012, this composition was created by Isabelle Doyen and Camille Goutal. The top notes reveal mint, citron and orange; the heart unfolds pine and fir; while the base settles on rockrose, angelica and tonka bean.

Nuit Etoile smells super fresh. It kicks off strong, acidic and reviving with orange and mint, then settles down and turns greenish. At the end, the tonka bean is barely noticeable. The projection is moderate and the longevity a bit short. I liked it, but I think it would suit a man better.

Nuit Etoilée is very fresh. Strong, acidic, and refreshing opening from the orange and mint. Gradually it softens and turns green. At the end, the tonka bean is very subtle. Moderate projection and somewhat weak longevity. I liked it, but I think I would prefer it on a man.

I tried this fragrance but forgot about it because my nose has it mixed with others. Although I keep the box, the scent has faded. I will try it again. The only thing I remember is that I fell in love with it upon smelling it, thinking of Bond’s Eau de New York. I will investigate further upon re-testing. What impressed me is that the orange and mint blend smells like tangerine.

I tried this fragrance, but as I smelled so many today, I got a bit of a fuzzy impression. Although I have the test card, my nose is saturated, so perhaps I’ll lose the scent from the card over time. I will try it again. The only thing I know is that I fell in love with it at first sniff and it reminded me of Bond’s Eau de New York for some reason… I will investigate when I try it again. What did impact me is that the orange and mint blend smells almost exactly like tangerine.

  • From the start, in warm weather, the mint is noticeable, with less pine and very little orange and fir. Once entering a refrigerated zone, as if the notes were inverted, the woody fir and fir stand out more, with less mint. I do not know why they say it is niche; on my skin it was moderate sillage and average longevity of 6 to 7 hours, with the last two hours barely on the skin, typical of common perfumes, not niche. Perhaps it is niche due to natural ingredients; yes, the pine smells very natural, like a Christmas tree. A good option for those who like it is ASPEN, very similar, but with greener woody notes and without pine. Also, ASPEN costs a fraction and has good sillage and longevity. For any age, daytime use in temperate climates, neither too cold nor too hot.

  • In warm weather, the mint, pine, and a hint of orange and fir emerge. In cold, it reverses: more pine and fir forest, less mint. I don’t know why they call it niche; on me it has moderate sillage and average longevity of 6 to 7 hours, typical of common perfumes. Perhaps it is niche due to natural ingredients, as the pine smells very natural, like a Christmas tree. A good option is ASPEN, very similar but greener and without pine, and much cheaper with better projection. Suitable for any age, daytime use in temperate climates.

  • I love evocative fragrances of moments or places, with more value than those that simply smell good. That is the case with Nuit Etoilée. Fresh and powerful opening: citrus, mint, and fir and pine woods giving a balsamic character. The dry-down is woody, sweet, with angelica, recreating tranquility. I perceive that tree-lined, peaceful, nocturnal landscape under starlight. If not for the moderate longevity and weak sillage, it would be sensational. Excellent composition. Rating: 7.5.

  • I love fragrances that evoke moments, sensations, or places, as they have more soul than those that simply smell good. With Nuit Etoile, I feel that potent nocturnal freshness, like a breeze: citrus and mint with fir and pine woods that give it a balsamic, nocturnal character. As it dries down, although it doesn’t last long, it leaves a sweet woody note with angelica that brings peace. I feel that tranquil, fresh wooded landscape under starlight, with muted blue and green colours surrounded by calm. If it weren’t for the moderate longevity and poor sillage, it would be sensational; the composition is excellent. Rating: 7.5.

One of the strangest scents in my collection, yet unique. It changes with the skin; on me, the mint stands out and I adore it. It’s for summer nights. It reminds me of the birth of my first daughter, which I started using that summer. I hold it in great affection.

  • I read reviews of Nuit Etoilée and the name sounded magical, like the air before dawn in my city by the Paraná River. I expected that scent, but it wasn’t that. I found another starry night in another city. Squeezing the valve, I knew it would stay with me. I’d never smelled anything like this. Annick Goutal captured the emotion of a landscape: a village with trees, grass, and a wood-fired oven. I imagine sitting on a cold stone with a copse before me. A cosy night with gentle breezes. Fresh opening, dry mint without spice and something of toasted orange peel. After 20 minutes, the woods arrive: fir with a dirty earthy tone and incredible smokiness. The pine is green and sparkling, but the fir dominates. Then it cleans up, leaving a sweet herbal note that reminds me of my childhood teddies and my kitten sleeping. Goutal’s naturalness connects with memories. Good projection, fair performance. Lasts half a day on clothes. A delight in the south during winter. Already have a second bottle.

My review is very different from CarCar’s, who gifted me a generous decant because I asked for it. But be careful, my experience is limited compared to theirs, which is enormous. It is a fragrance that after 8 or 10 attempts I still do not understand. Perhaps it is because my nose is accustomed to feminine flowers, white florals, soft red fruits, and delicate citrus woods like in D&G Light Blue Intense. It has a loud, strong, horrible and bitter opening; after several applications I identified that it smells like a crushed green bug, a plague that anyone who smells it never forgets. As it dries down it remains the same, like stepping into a pine forest with stinky mushrooms hugging you. Only a bitter orange, more similar to grapefruit, cuts through that penetrating scent that, to make matters worse, lasts for many hours. I hope olfactory fatigue makes me forget it… impossible, it is there, annoying. Sensuality: 0, or rather -1, something complicated for a fragrance that is probably nocturnal and niche. I cannot imagine who would wear it; perhaps I would gift it to someone anosmic or to someone who did me a wrong as revenge, but the price scares me. To summarise: Fragrance 2/10, Longevity 9/10, Sensuality -1/10, Price painful, Originality 10/10, Tendency to headache 8/10. Only for those seeking something very original and atypical, lovers of bitter greens. Respectful regards.

My take differs from expert CarCar’s. After ten sprays, I still don’t get it. My nose, accustomed to white florals, detects a thunderous, bitter, horrible opening, akin to crushing a green bug. As it dries, it smells of a pine forest with foul-smelling fungi. Only a bitter orange cuts through that penetrating scent that lasts for hours. Sensuality: -1. Perhaps for someone anosmic or as revenge. Painful price. Originality: 10. Only for lovers of green and bitter. Fragrant greetings.

  • A fragrance of natural essences that has nothing nocturnal about it; it is diurnal, soft, and has a resinous touch that makes it a distinct citrus. The opening is very aromatic, with spicy, non-sweet citrus that moves to a coniferous resinous aroma with a certain sweetness from the tonka. The mint doesn’t stand out as much as in others, overshadowed on my skin by the resins. Performance is average, but it pays for the quality. It is well-made, perfect for wearing all year round during the day. With heat, the citrus and soft woods shine; with cold, the sweetness of the tonka is pleasant. Ideal for informal wear to work or daily errands, it is kind and optimistic. Unisex and youthful. Pity the price is a bit high, but it pays for the good work of this house, even without falling into the hands of multinationals that kill perfumes. Diurnal and jovial. Merry Christmas to all!

  • Natural daytime essences, nothing nocturnal here. Spicy, resinous citrus with a touch of sweet tonka; the mint hides beneath the resins. Moderate performance but worth it. Perfect for the day in casual wear. Unisex and youthful. A pity about the price, but the house does it well. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.

  • Fresh anise upon first spray, reminiscent of Egyptian bazaars. It stays intense for two hours before softening into herbs and a unique bitter edge that sets it apart from other greens. Simply wonderful.
