It smells too strong on me.
The perfume worn by Marilyn Monroe. Number 5 arrived in America from Paris when Allied forces were in the city occupied by the Nazis. Soldiers returned home and gifted the perfume to their girlfriends, fiancées, and wives. For years and years, No. 5 remains the most famous in history. When asked what she wore to bed, Marilyn replied: Chanel No. 5. It was her favourite, but what she wore was not the Eau de Parfum nor the Eau de Toilette, but the Cologne. There is a famous black-and-white photo of Marilyn in her room, standing before a mirror applying the Cologne No. 5. There are several formulas, but if you wish to smell like Marilyn, buy the Cologne. It is strong, warm, and spicy. It begins with aldehydes, the very first in the history of perfumery. Ernest Beaux, Coco Chanel’s French friend, invented it in 1921. Before No. 5, there were no perfumes with aldehydes, only floral oils. Aldehydes provide brilliance and splendour. Following No. 5, No. 22 was formulated, which also begins with aldehydes. All Chanel perfumes feature these classic aldehydes. No. 5 also starts with citrus notes of bergamot and lemon, providing freshness upon application. Then, as the aldehydes recede, the floral aroma of rose, iris, valley lily, and ylang-ylang emerges. Rose and ylang stand out. However, it does not remain solely floral; it is much stronger and sweeter. Patchouli dominates towards the end, alongside strong sandalwood and animalic musk notes. This lends an intense warmth. No wonder Marilyn loved it. It feels like a very luxurious animal fur coat. Marilyn was a beautiful yet lost woman, with the capacity to love and the desire to be loved. This fragrance asks you to love it, and forever. And it has succeeded. Marilyn Monroe and Chanel No. 5 will continue to be loved forever.
This fragrance, which was once a revolution on par with Joy by Patou or Je Reviens by Worth, has not had the same fortune as them; it has simply been forgotten, merely because of the fascination Marilyn Monroe inspired in the 20th century. I believe there are other examples that have aged better, such as L’Air du Temps from 1950 or Anaïs Anaïs from 1978. Considering that, according to experts, olfactory tastes change every five years, these two certainly deserve praise.
This fragrance was a revolution on par with Joy by Patou or Je Reviens by Worth, yet it has not had the same fortune: it has simply been forgotten, largely because Marilyn Monroe’s figure captivated the 20th century. I believe there are other examples that have aged better, such as L’Air du Temps from 1950 or Anaïs Anaïs from 1978. Considering that experts say olfactory tastes change every five years, these two certainly deserve praise.
While the Parfum is the original, the EDC is its lighter, more faithful contemporary version—the one Marilyn Monroe wore. In the 50s, there was only Eau de Cologne and pure Perfume; Eau de Toilette came later. Back then, EDCs were more potent than modern EDTs. N5 was the first to use direct aliphatic aldehydes (C10, C11, C12), organic compounds with their own distinct scent. It takes a connoisseur to appreciate why this fragrance possesses such grandeur and longevity. The only explanation that comes to mind is that its enduring appeal stems from the quality of the formula and the precise balance of its ingredients. I also understand that its innovative character keeps it alive for future generations who have copied its ideas. That is why I believe Chanel N5 retains the same power today as it did 70 years ago. I tried the EDC today: it is deeper, less bright, but sweeter, more creamy and powdery. Overall, it is rounder and more compact than modern concentrations.
