And it all ended up being just an illusion… 😶🌫️ This indie house is new (2022), and a perfume from their catalogue by Jono Bornstein caught my eye last year for its notes. I’m a fan of blackberry (and many other notes present here). Cloud Illusions is basically a herbal-menthol perfume that dominates the composition, while the blackberry sits in a secondary plane, yet remains true to its nature, meaning it smells acidic. I detect a brushstroke of violet, and the perfume has a slight effervescent texture from the musk. That’s it. The herbal combo is too much and drowns out all the other notes. It’s not as original a perfume as its notes might suggest. 💡 The chewing gum/chewing gum accord requires a very powerful mental exercise because it’s hard to detect. Linear, modest performance, versatile and unisex. It stains white clothes (like a good indie perfume), so keep that in mind. I like the quality; the raw materials are first-class as it uses absolutes and lily-of-the-valley root tincture. I like the concept, but in my opinion, it falls short. It doesn’t smell bad, but I feel it got stuck in a beta phase, lacking development, as with those notes there was plenty of room to create something fantastic. It’s like driving a four-cylinder Mustang; it’s fast but… it lacks that punch and rage of the GT (eight cylinders), that exhaust rumble that could easily draw a smile from a mime. Forget the Shelby; that’s a wet dream. Off the cuff, I would have liked to smell an ‘herbal-menthol’ perfume but dial down the intensity of this combo a bit, boost the blackberry a little, let a semi-creamy tone of sandalwood and iris play with the violet, adding brushstrokes with that same effervescent texture. Could it also emanate a chewing gum vibe, or is that asking too much? A disappointment, although for disappointments this year, I’ll stick with ‘Blackout’ from the Italian house…
