From the nineties until the most irrelevant launch, as is the case with a house like Trussardi that has been zigzagging since its birth, it was at least interesting. Donna was one of those perfumes where just seeing the colour of the liquid made you realise it was not an ozonic or youthful fragrance. With a masculine, dirty, floral, crimped, crunchy, and very sexual opening, like a version of the 80s chypre formulas oriented towards a more modern woman but without losing that slightly ‘dirty’ touch that made you inevitably think of sheer stockings thrown on the floor, a garter belt, an ashtray overflowing with cigarette butts, and a bed with rumpled satin sheets. Every decade boasts those emblematic perfumes that pave the way and mark the rest of imitators; today we have been handed the Frenchouli. In the 80s and 90s, this was exactly the perfume that defined their years, alcoholic and intoxicating formulas, with nuclear power and deliberately sexual. If you are a friend of this type of perfume, even a mediocrity like Donna seems a treasure surrounded by what is sold today as perfumes.
It was a gift in the 90s and I was too young then for such an aroma: resounding, complex, dense, nocturnal. A little went a long way; it left its trail on clothes even after washing. Unforgettable, but I would not buy it again.
1994? Without seeing the birth date, I’d swear Trussardi launched Donna before the mid-90s. To my nose, it smells more like the 80s, reminiscent of the padded shoulders in Magie Noire, Coco, Paloma Picasso, and Fendi Donna; it sits a couple of rungs below those, yet it is infinitely superior to what we’re accustomed to today. For anyone who has never smelled it, it is a beautiful revelation. It is another of those little-known perfumes, the scent of a great lady who knows how to play perfectly with her weapons of seduction: very sexy, very sensual, with a late blooming. It is strictly feminine (but we put no limits on providence) with a voluptuous, determined, and luminous elegance. It is captivating, yet always stays one step ahead of the blatant sensuality of certain floral chypres of the era. Very sexy and quite luxurious, where charm and elegance coexist in perfect balance. Donna wants to seduce and exalt its wearer to a level where resistance is difficult, positioning itself as a notable instrument of capture and self-affirmation. The fragrance is noble and mature, a highly expressive aldehydic floral chypre of Italian glamour. Fresh at first, spiced afterwards, with a warm base of labdanum and patchouli. Many flowers ensure a multidimensional density in a field of tension that embraces green, sweet, acidic, sour, spiced, oriental, and woody notes. The top and heart are radiant; if it were a musical composition, it would be a cheerful andante. It opens with a great harmony between aldehydes and citrus before giving way to a flowered heart softened by labdanum, of great beauty and variety, with rose, jasmine, lily, and a lovely slightly liquorish vibe. Even the base leaves a pleasant sensation of well-perfumed cream. This Eau de Toilette never veers into gourmand, as indeed it rarely happened then, unlike today. The tone always remains high and bright. Despite a slight touch of the past, Trussardi Donna is a perfume that is erroneously not very popular and deserves to become a classic. It has temperament; anyone who has loved it or simply tried it, obviously cannot forget it.
