  • I love dark roses; Rose de Jacqueminot is a clear example, intense with wine notes, sweet and sensual. That scheme was repeated many times afterwards. Gucci 3 completes the legacy of Rose Jacqueminot by adding aldehydes that make it more narcotic, sensual and deep with its chypre base. Gucci is incredibly rich. I think the difference with Diva or Paloma lies in that muguet/leather note that makes it bitter, sweet and juicy all at once. For me, it’s the undisputed queen, especially in the extrait. Many fragrances from the eighties boast of having narcissus, but here it’s where I notice it most. It’s pure luxury and sophistication. Although it has leather, it’s not as pronounced as in Fendi. It may be the most interesting floral chypre, but each has its own style. Some compare it to Paloma Picasso; they may resemble each other in the end when both become powdery and dark, but Paloma is more animalistic with its central carnation note and a very present green moss. This is based on the eau de toilette and the extrait.

What a shame it’s no longer available. My mother needs one; it’s her favourite perfume and she adored it with everything she had. It’s obsessively exquisite rose, the centre of a complex structure, the perfect example of a strict school of perfumers when fragrances had magic and superpowers. If I could give one to her and another to myself, what luck.

  • Yesterday I picked up my first bottle of Gucci N3. I sprayed it once on my wrist to test it and I have to say it smells almost identical to Yves Saint Laurent’s Y.

  • I tried it in the nineties and liked it at first, but over time the scent became irritating and I put it aside. I resolved to finish the bottle and kept using it even though I didn’t like it, and the irony is that many people stopped me to tell me how delicious it smelled. I can’t quite recall what it was like now, but I do remember the compliments I received, even when I couldn’t stand it myself.
