Some perfumes are pretty, others beautiful, but very few become a dream: that is Asja by Fendi. This perfect oriental, launched in 1992 by Jean Guichard (the same man who created Eden and Lou Lou for Cacharel), did not make a mistake; he stayed true to his style. Asja fuses Mediterranean and Oriental roots with sublime spices that balance woods, flowers and fruits, evoking much of the Mediterranean. Its black and gold bottle, in an oblique shape, reminds me of the genie’s lamp, but also of a spectacular woman in a dress that frames her silhouette, carnations in her hair and ready for a flamenco. It begins with delineated fruits: peaches and red fruits with lime, announcing a spectacular carnation soaked in clove tea, honey and cinnamon. For a while, you feel nuts, rose petals and mimosa buds, without taking away the spotlight from the clove, honey and cinnamon, which stand out on my skin. Then emerges an elegant sandalwood with cedar, benzoin, sweet amber and a touch of vanilla. Asja behaves like soft silk that caresses every inch of your body: voluptuous, sensual, elegant, exotic and intoxicating. What anger and melancholy to know that only memories of this beauty remain and what a nightmare it is to have only 75 ml left to keep dreaming.
Some perfumes are pretty, others beautiful, but very few are a dream, and that is Asja by Fendi. This perfect oriental came out in 1992 with Jean Guichard, the same man who created Eden and Lou Lou for Cacharel, and here he did not fail, true to his style. Asja mixes Mediterranean and Middle Eastern roots with sublime spices that balance woods, flowers and fruits, evoking much of the Mediterranean. Its black and gold bottle, at an oblique angle, reminds me of the genie’s lamp or of a woman in a spectacular dress that frames her silhouette, with black carnations in her hair, ready for a flamenco. It starts with well-marked fruits: peaches and red fruits with lime, announcing a spectacular carnation soaked in clove tea and intense honey and cinnamon; for a moment you feel nuts, rose petals and mimosa buds, without taking away the spotlight from the clove, honey and cinnamon, which dominate on my skin. Then comes an elegant sandalwood with cedar, benzoin, sweet amber and a touch of vanilla. Asja is like soft silk that caresses every inch of your body, voluptuous, sensual, elegant, exotic and intoxicating. What anger and melancholy to know that only memories of this fragrance remain and what a nightmare it is to see that I have only 75 ml of this elixir left in my hands to keep dreaming.
No one doubts Jean Guichard’s eye. The Fendi collection from that era breathed Africa, but the concept of Asja leaned towards the Asian. It is the perfect bridge between the floral chypre of the eighties and a dense oriental with fruity notes. It reminds me very much of the 1985 Fendi, with that combo of rose, carnation and sandalwood that is seductive, but here everything is more liquorish, sweet, smoky and oriental. It doesn’t reach the spiciness of Opium nor the fruitiness of Poison; it stays right in between. That sweet, fruity and liquorish rose must be highlighted as it defines the aroma of Asja and is its greatest virtue. It is difficult to find a vintage of this treasure, but it is worth it for those seeking provocative, sweet, intense red roses, semi-alcoholic and with an oriental sparkle.
I would love to try it and keep it because Fendi never disappoints with its creations; I’m sure it smells divine.
This is not merely an accessory; it is the signature of a woman who knows how to push boundaries and live on the edge. It declares a sensual choice of life, an eroticism that first makes you hesitate and then leaves you at her feet. Insolent yet romantic, a femme fatale and adventurer, she gifts you sensations of languid atmospheres and makes you want to touch her. Fendi, since its first fragrances for women, has championed sensuality by combining the desire to seduce with glamour. Intense olfactory notes, a celestial taste of sin for elegant and charismatic women. It is not for the timid; its opulent character is evident: fruity citrus, Egyptian jasmine, carnation, ylang-ylang, spices, cinnamon roses and vanilla over cedar. With honey and amber, it becomes a potion of seduction and refinement. Mystical spices, a biting cinnamon that draws a flickering candlelight in some hearts. Warm and welcoming, like the arms of a goddess of love to spend the best night.
I was surprised to find myself reminded of those baby wipes – that clean, creamy, vanilla scent with a touch of talcum powder. On my skin, it lingers all day, with a balsamic and honey base. Occasionally, there are bursts of spice, like Ceylon cinnamon and nutmeg; a subtle heat that’s always present. Many thanks to @jerry drake for sending me the sample.
