Fougere Oud from Dossier is a woody oriental created for everyone, regardless of gender. The idea is built around tension: sparkling spice against shadowy woods.
It begins in an aromatic, fairly vibrant way before turning deeper, finishing on a rounded base of resin and gentle sweetness.
At the outset there is tobacco with pink pepper and coriander. The tobacco note feels dry and faintly smoky, pink pepper lends bright piquancy, and coriander contributes a green, herbal freshness.
Through the middle, oud wood is joined by patchouli and vetiver. Oud supplies profound woody character, patchouli brings an earthy fullness, whilst vetiver keeps the texture drier and greener.
The foundation combines tonka bean, labdanum and cedar. Tonka bean offers a soft, almondy sweetness, labdanum provides an ambery resinous glow, and cedar underpins it all with tidy, refined wood.
The general impression touches on tobacco, amber, sweetness, musk, patchouli and balsamic facets. The result is enveloping rather than cloying, mellow yet with plenty of depth.
It is a statement style with an after-dark feel, most at home in autumn and winter, when its warm, resinous side can develop at an unhurried pace.
