So many negative criticisms without even having heard it impact me. It was my favourite perfume back in 2007, so I’m the first interested party in it smelling like its previous formula. I believe I read that the original did have orange blossom (jasmine), which is why not all notes were on Fragrantica. It was expected and normal that the bottle wasn’t the same; increasingly, bottles are leaning towards more geometric and sober lines. I won’t say if it’s the same or not until I try it. On the other hand, €100 for 100 ml is the recommended price (which JPG will have on their official website); that doesn’t mean it will sell at that price in perfumeries, and especially in Spain.
J.P. Gaultier Marketing Department: – People are asking for Gaultier² to return. What do you think if we launch something with the same name, hype it up as if it were the same cherished composition, create expectations, and then release something different? Perfumer: – Hold my cubata! ❤️ Dior loves this.
I saw the name and thought this unique fragrance was returning. I knew the 2016 vintage version and underestimated it until I got the 120ml bottle two years later, and what a good purchase that was. I see the new launch keeps the name but changes the notes. What is the marketing logic? Wouldn’t it be more logical to launch a flanker of the original instead of using the same name to ‘recapture’ loyal customers who will be duped?
Marketing geniuses: they bring back a discontinued perfume, change all the notes so it doesn’t smell like the vintage version, and for that they could have just launched a ‘Gaultier 3’ and been done with it.
What strikes me most is that people write as if they’ve already smelled the perfume, even though I don’t know if it’s out until October 3rd. It’s fascinating what happens on this website, worthy of science fiction films where true daredevils write reviews based on what they imagine, mind-blowing.
It won’t be sold in Spain right away. This October it can be found for €100 in France, Germany, the UK and Benelux via the Jean Paul Gaultier website. If the bottle has changed, the perfume isn’t the same; that’s evident. Fortunately, I have the authentic one with its magnet bottle, just for opening, which I bought in 2016, but well, when it arrives it will be tested. By the way, I’ve never paid €100 for the original. Will it be a niche version?
Has anyone tried this yet? I still can’t find it in stores here in Spain.
And in the end… has anyone actually tried it?
They were going to get it for me in Germany, but now it’s out of stock on their website. I suppose it will reach all countries sooner or later, but this is creating an enormous hype.
@olfactorymemories, of course, here reading the notes (often misspelled) you already deduce the scent because you are prestigious perfumers. I emphasise the same: you’re reckless and without even hearing it, you rant about longevity; it’s laughable. They don’t even know the real notes of the old Gaultier 2 because it doesn’t just have three; it has a very pronounced and noticeable floral part that isn’t declared. I know this because I have a 120 ml bottle of the old version. To go further, it’s already out in Germany and discussed in forums that the scent is completely identical to the old one. I trust a German who has already smelled it more than those commenting here with random hypotheses and no foundation.
@olfactorymemories, how are you, friend? I’m not a master of anything, but here on Fragrantica there are many apprentices of everything and masters of nothing. You’re fixated on the notes; I emphasise that houses rarely give all the olfactory pyramids and those notes are commercial. Very likely Jean Paul Gaultier owns the original formula of Francis Kurkdjian, so they simply have to replicate it. Who am I to tell you what a flanker is? But I’ll give you an example: Le Male and Le Male Essence de Parfum (this one is a flanker). In Gaultier 2 it’s not a flanker; it’s a reissue of a discontinued perfume. A flanker is a variant of the same fragrance like Dior Homme, where concentration and notes change starting from the original base. If it were called Gaultier 2 Oud Edition, it would be a flanker. It’s a bit annoying, but look into German forums where users already have the bottle and say it smells exactly the same, just a little softer. It’s logical that a perfume from 2005 after nearly 20 years will smell denser due to extreme maceration and the volatility of the top notes. I think there’s little more to add.
No grudges, friend, we’re just debating.
This is shameful. A product like this is only launched in three countries via the web and they don’t ship elsewhere. On eBay, Germans are making a fortune selling Gaultier 2 (2022) for €150 and €250. What a shame that Puig and Jean Paul Gaultier allow this; it should have been a global launch. According to German forums, it smells exactly like the 2005 version but softer. If I manage to get a bottle, I’ll give my opinion, but at those resale prices, only Jean Paul Gaultier’s mother will buy it.
There’s plenty of controversy here, naturally, because the listed notes aren’t everything, tastes vary, and the components aren’t 100% identical even if it smells similar, which is why it was discontinued. Francis Kurkdjian has the mastery to achieve 90% of the original. I’ve tested Guerlain reformulations that are good, and sometimes the difference is just down to maceration time. I enjoy well-preserved ‘oxidised’ fragrances that become intense and dense vanillas. I hope to try the relaunch soon, though I have few hopes. I tried the original once or twice and liked it. Please be serious and stop the hate; not everyone appreciates it equally, but many come here seeking opinions to buy.
Just brought it back from Germany and it’s a relief: the 2022 version is identical to the discontinued one, with that floral opening and amber-vanilla base. I only notice the opening is slightly softer and it lasts a bit less, but it remains a worthy continuation of an icon.
I liked the dry-down, it is very cosy; not so much the opening as it is too floral for my taste. I have not tried the original version to compare, but it reminded me quite a bit of Joop! Homme, with a scent of higher quality, as if it were a ‘deluxe’ version of the same.
Well, after waiting quite a long time, I can finally talk about the Gaultier 2 2022 edition. First of all, I was a user of Gaultier 2, it was my go-to perfume until it was withdrawn. I can affirm it is exactly the same perfume as the 2005 version, simply it changes and in that I do notice it: the projection and longevity of the perfume are more moderate in the 2022 edition, something I expected. Very happy and I hope they distribute it in perfumeries in Spain.
To all those interested: it can now be bought in Spain from the JPG website for 100€.
It has just arrived and after spraying it… it is 100% identical to the discontinued 2005 version, I have it very much in mind and I can affirm it. Do not spend what they ask for a vintage. Best regards.
If I have to choose the opening of a perfume from all I have smelled in my life, I would choose the opening of the vintage version of Gaultier 2. Impactful, hypnotic and pleasurable until one says enough. The spell of the opening disappeared on the dry-down, but it remained a wonder. What never fully convinced me were the vanilla and sweet base notes. I never bought Gaultier 2 because of that vanilla base which I felt was too feminine and above all because as a university student I was poorer than a toast with water. I had no lack of desire to buy it and every time I entered a perfumerie it was rare that I did not leave without a tester of Gaultier 2 or having tried it on skin. Today it has arrived and I received it with great excitement. I confirm it is practically the same scent, but I have perceived some changes. The opening is not as impactful as I remembered, it lacks something it had before and now does not… the dry-down is practically the same and where I do notice a difference is in the base notes in the final phases of the perfume. This intense vanilla base is no longer there or, if it is, I barely perceive it; I do perceive some woody earthy notes that I personally have liked very much and which make this special scent more masculine. In my opinion this is the biggest change in this perfume: they have notably reduced the vanilla. But in the end it is Gaultier 2, it is a wonder and I will enjoy it like a dwarf. Please note that this review is actually a first impression of a perfume that arrived today and my comparisons with the vintage version come from my olfactory memory from many years ago and may be inaccurate.
I completely agree with Mithrandir’s review. Since Gaultier 2 was launched until it was discontinued, I used it many times. I still have a bottle of the magnetised version stuck to the fridge 🙂. This new version is, indeed, very, very similar, but on the opening I remember the original as more ‘vibrant’, more intense, and both the projection and longevity were greater. Now I notice it is more muted and the vanilla part is almost not noticeable when dried. Nevertheless I must say yes, it is very similar to the 2005 version and I love how it smells. I bought a bottle when it was relaunched and it was not yet sold in Spain and another more recently. Although they smell the same, as a curiosity I will say that on the back of the box the first one I bought described the ingredients as jasmine, sandalwood and ambergris. On the second one it changes and lists the original 2005 ingredients: musk, vanilla and amber… Well, things of marketing…
If I have to choose one perfume launch from all I’ve smelled, I’d stick with the vintage version of Gaultier 2. Impactful, hypnotic, and pleasant. While the initial spell fades as it dries, it remains a marvel. What never convinced me was the sweet, avainilled base, too feminine. I never bought the original for that reason and because, as a student, I thought it was poor. It has arrived today and I confirm it smells practically the same, though I notice some changes: the opening is no longer so impactful, it’s missing something it had before. The dry-down is the same, but in the final phases I notice less of that intense avainilled base and more woody, earthy notes that are much appreciated and make it more masculine. In my opinion, the big change is that they’ve lowered the vanilla. After all, it’s Gaultier 2, a marvel I’m going to enjoy like a dwarf. Keep in mind this is my first impression and my comparisons come from my olfactory memory from years ago, which can be faulty.
I never thought the return of a discontinued perfume would bring me so much happiness. It remains the same, wonderful, and pleasant, totally unisex. The only thing I hope is they don’t take it off the market again, because it would be a shame for many, including me.

The Gaultier 2 reissue is a tribute to a perfume that has made history and, in my case, reminds me of precious fragments of a life lived, a life always savoured to the full, even in the less easy moments. It is not simply a trip down memory lane, but an equilibrium (achieved?) that, in an age of maturity, is positive because it makes you understand that those who truly love rarely regret their choices. When I heard Gaultier 2 was returning, I was moved in silence, somewhat worried because many creations that return from a glittering past often turn out to be a bitter disappointment. But that is not the case here. The new Gaultier 2 bears a clear resemblance to its illustrious predecessor despite being lighter and airier (the blatant potency, one of the main sources of its popularity, is no longer there as such) and with the inclusion of a noticeable floral note that makes it even more unisex. The result is frankly good, although those happily owning the original version will notice it is less daring and scandalous, but slightly rounder and adapted to the days of today. The musk and vanilla have been considerably reduced in intensity and almost replaced olfactorily by sandalwood and jasmine, making it more mature and versatile. Unfortunately, it cannot return the emotions experienced, but a great scent has returned that is a modern interpretation of this immortal classic. Even if it falls slightly short in comparison, I can recommend everyone to try this fragrance if they have the opportunity. Good work JPG, despite being impossible to find in physical stores. I used to know a guy who wore this perfume; I found it addictive, when I got close I couldn’t stop smelling it, it had a very sexy touch. Soon after they discontinued it and I never smelled it again. When I heard it was returning, I rushed to buy a bottle and… what memories! The truth is I don’t know if it’s very different, but it seemed exactly the same to me. Since then, I use it for going out at night and special occasions. On my skin, I notice it’s avainilled, though I don’t see that declared note. I see it as totally unisex, nocturnal, and for cold weather. It has excellent trail and projection. If you spray it on a coat or scarf, you can smell it for days. The fact that nowadays it’s only bought online gives it a certain exclusivity; you won’t smell it en masse on the street. Very happy with its return 😍.
I used to wear this perfume for a boy I knew and found it addictive; whenever I got close to him I couldn’t stop smelling it, it had a very sexy edge. It was discontinued shortly afterwards and I haven’t smelled it since. When I heard it was returning, I rushed to buy a bottle and… what memories! To be honest, I’m not sure if it is very different from the original, but it seemed exactly the same to me. Since then I have worn it for going out at night and special occasions. On my skin (I don’t know if due to my pH or because I am a woman) I notice it as vanilla-scented, although that note is not listed. I see it as totally unisex, for night-time and cooler weather. It has excellent trail and projection. If you spray it on a coat or scarf you can smell it for days. The fact that it can only be bought online now gives it a certain exclusivity; you won’t be smelling it massively on the street. Very happy with its return 😍.
First time trying this Gaultier 2, a wonderful scent. I own the 2005 version and it is identical to the original: musk, vanilla and amber. What a delicious smell, especially once it has dried on the skin. It has good longevity and has become my favourite; the musk smells absolutely fantastic.
