Sometimes less is more, creating a sense of complexity. The KING OF FLOWERS by @alghabra_parfums opens with great intensity, featuring oud and patchouli, but this fades quickly. Then, very gradually, the true ingredients emerge. The bergamot is a fleeting flash but provides the perfect freshness at the start. Next comes the grapefruit, dry and bitter; I’m not usually a fan, but blended with the florals it becomes attractive and peculiar. Then iris and lavender join in, creating a creamy, metallic, powdery scent, highly aromatic thanks to those purple flowers. Each flower smells different depending on the skin; on me, the iris really stands out. As it dries down, amber takes over, turning the fragrance into a balsamic, resinous broth with earthy notes, which explains my initial impression of patchouli. The base is slightly woody due to the sandalwood, and the whole thing is a wheel of olfactory memories. I absolutely love this signature and will be trying their discovery set to explore the entire collection.

  • It reminds me of Ambre Sultan by Lutens, but softer and without that sting; I don’t know the price, but the quality is evident. Forget the florals, here a sweet, well-oriental amber takes centre stage.
