The same thing happened to me with Abicor; I thought the perfume had gone off.
Heure Bleue is a masterpiece with over a century of history, nothing like what I expected… I don’t find it out of date; on the contrary, right now it feels retro, and upon reflection, that retro is even modern. Perhaps a scent can remain so secluded for years that when it resurges, it feels like a new arrival, something distinct, a colour in that sometimes monochrome world of perfume. If L’Heure Bleue comes into your hands, I recommend giving it a chance; the difference among so many could be its best trump card. Its flowers are tremendous yet never innocent or strident; they are its calling card and also the background scenery, especially in the Eau de Toilette. A wonderful clove that so far is the one I’ve liked most in a perfume; I usually struggle with this flower, finding it either too spicy or too folksy; here it doesn’t have that tone because it holds the iris’s hand, which nuances the whole ensemble and is a relaxed, more elegant and romantic flower. The multiple and luxurious drops of anise give Heure a playful, artistic and punchy character. Tonka and vanilla give it a final body that rounds it off for multiple occasions, as it never feels flat. When its journey on the skin is complete, it has taught you what Guerlain really is. For me, it is far more beautiful than Esprit de Oscar R., which, between its citrusy launch and half-life, takes an unexpected turn with a blade-like heliotrope and doesn’t offer the serenity and fullness step-by-step that L’Heure Bleue provides, both in EDT and EDP. This fragrance is a great reformatter of noses, putting back in their place entrenched and somewhat forgotten concepts in perfumery; its over 100 years inhabit it with patience towards change, offering a non-flashy but very real journey to discover aesthetically forgotten fragrances that today offer well-trodden paths from the past, teaching us to recognise the beauty of authentic perfumery transhumance. It feels a peace and serenity of its own, proper for the blue hour, the time of day to reflect; a time when almost everything is done, but what perhaps wasn’t possible today might be possible tomorrow. It is not about settling, but simply maturity, knowing how to be; this is how L’Heure Bleue says goodbye to the day, with dignity. A Guerlain beauty, highly recommended when one is tired of the current, even of the new millennium; its equidistant archaeology in perfumery results in an experience that is anything but passé, it is a retro with capital letters, a fragrance of beauty, of peace, a ingenuity we can use today, when? Whenever you want to Feel. Its characteristic powdery iris mixed with violet does not personally cause me a nostalgia that could be sad or understood for use in another era and feel out of date; my nose, my psyche and my soul understand it as a state of peace, it is serene and doesn’t even produce melancholy but a serene-peace of a great perpetual blue, clean, without bad vibes, waiting to rest to fall asleep and have good dreams. The good thing about Heure is that to feel it you don’t need to sleep and dream, but it provides me with that stability while awake. After all, do the best dreams happen when you wake up?
I had been trying to get hold of it for years, smelled it in a decant and it drove me mad. It is very similar to the moss in Mitsouko but in the background, sparkling, with a warm anise. My joy turned to a pit of despair: on skin it turns sour, as if spoilt, I don’t know if it’s my pH. Curiously, the floral base lasts until morning. I would prefer it in textiles.
