Liu was born in the 1920s by the hand of Jacques Guerlain, housed in a black bottle with an Art Deco air. The official legend claims it was created for Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, yet another version tells how Jacques surprised his wife with this fragrance as a response to his rival, Chanel No. 5. Essentially, Liu is the most austere version of that classic. What sets them apart is that distinctive ‘Guerlinade’ note that runs through the entire family of Guerlain perfumes. Comparing No. 5 with Liu is like comparing two twins: they are identical yet behave differently. If No. 5 is Juliette, the wicked and passionate one, Liu is Justine, the unfortunate soul who hides those same attributes beneath a cloak of virtue and purity. This Christmas, Guerlain has taken Liu out of its trunk with a limited-edition makeup launch and the fragrance in body mist; the classic returns.
