  L’Occitane aimed to rescue flowers that modern perfumery has largely ignored, with a very Provençal vision. Merilot is my favourite for being so different. You don’t need to know what sweet clover smells like to appreciate this beauty; it smells of grain harvested in summer and dried for autumn. It’s not a cereal scent, but something unusual, with that sensual, almost sexual touch of wheat or barley that some skin tones possess. With little sillage, it gives the impression of being the skin’s natural scent. It’s linear, with little development. Its main notes are wheat, hay, bran, hazelnut, and to a lesser extent, carrot seeds and galbanum; pear, cedar, and vetiver merely accompany. I think it’s the most original and good thing L’Occitane has done in years, far from the sweet flowers of Fleurs De Cerisier or the insecticide-like lemons of Verveine. I love the bottle for its elegance and the real wood cap. However, the paper label in a house with those prices seems like cheekiness, as if we’re back to Loewe. I like it as a signature for its discreet, intimate, and suggestive quality. It suits all year round and for anyone brave enough to wear it, regardless of gender. Lasts eight to ten hours, always discreet, ideal for daytime wear.
