I was surprised by its low rating and, despite seeing divided opinions elsewhere, I dared to buy it blind. The truth is, I like it, but although the bottle is stylish and designed for her, it smells too masculine. It has a lovely sorbet lemon opening, but it’s a pity the fragrance is so fleeting and lasts no more than three hours. Having only lavender and geranium in the floral heart doesn’t seem ideal for a woman; they create a sour, stinging fougère effect that makes the cedar taste bitter until the noticeable musk finally softens it, by which time the lemon has turned woody and heavily timbered. The only solution I’ve found is to layer it with Álvarez Gómez, but the effect doesn’t last beyond fifteen minutes. The good thing is that its trail is moderate to soft. Putting aside its lack of power and longevity, its resemblance to Sauvage is very noticeable. It also reminds me of a fresher, more lemony version of the Stradivarius room spray, so it could prove overwhelming for delicate noses. As I said, I like it, but Solace has that androgynous quality that ultimately leans towards the masculine, so if I recommend it, it’s for men or women who enjoy wearing men’s perfumes, because if you’re going to do it, do it properly.
