Second review of a Penhaligon’s from the 2016 Portraits collection. I repeat what I said about the previous one: supreme quality and a very feminine scent. But watch out, as both (the Duke and this Duchess) revolve around rose, the similarity is strong. And between us: if I thought the first one was unisex, this one is too, and even closer to the ‘masculine’ standard, could it be my perception? The opening is a delicious rose that turns sweet within minutes, like Elie Saab Le Parfum. Then it evolves into something soapy. What I like most is that its four notes are noticeable both together and separately, each with its own sparkle. The creator is Christophe Raynaud, the genius behind Paco Rabanne’s One Million. Verdict: Approved.
A good fragrance, but not for me. On my skin, only the rose is noticeable: fresh, sparkling, cheerful and spring-like. The wood doesn’t give it body; it stays light and linear. It lasts about five hours with moderate projection. If you like fresh rose, it’s ideal.
On the skin, it’s a fresh, sweet rose at first. It didn’t disappoint, but it didn’t quite captivate me either. Then it fades quickly, leaving a very subtle soapy trail. To be fair, on the other wrist I’m wearing Bedwitching Yasmine, which is another world in terms of intensity; however, compared to it, this smells more versatile for daytime or for younger girls, whereas Yasmine is dark and potent (although its longevity disappointed me, perhaps it improves when worn at home rather than in a shop).
A musky rose with a barely perceptible woody touch; nothing ugly, but it doesn’t stand out from the crowd.
Any rose perfume is better than this. Minimal longevity, less than an hour. Clean rose scent. Not worth it for the high price.
I tested this perfume several times with the sample set. It’s just a clean rose, nothing special for me. Nice, but nothing that would motivate me to spend 240 euros. The quality on my skin wasn’t good either; after 30 minutes it sits right on the skin and the longevity is laughable for its price. It doesn’t last me an hour and a half, I think it’s the shortest-lived of all I’ve tried. Perhaps it works better on someone else…
Beautiful, with high-quality ingredients, but extremely short-lived. I have it as a gift, but I wouldn’t advise buying it due to its poor performance.
Boring. A typical and clichéd rose scent, neither good nor bad. It smells nice, but has a price far too high when there are more complex and interesting rose perfumes at much lower prices.
Terrible performance. Nothing special; it’s not worth the price.
Terrible performance. Nothing special, it doesn’t deserve its price.
I loved the scent; very pleasant if you like rose, with a musky touch that makes it delicious. The downside is that it didn’t last long. I agree that for the price, I expected more; it’s strange because others from this house usually last longer. It’s a very pleasant but simple scent and not durable enough for the cost.

A fairly classic musky rose, nothing special in my opinion. On my skin, the longevity wasn’t too bad, but I find it excessively simple to justify the price, even if you like the scent (which I don’t). There are similar designer roses for much less.
Penhaligon’s story for ‘The Coveted Duchess Rose’ is curious: an unhappy duchess seeking diversion and unrestrained romance. The bottle is an interpretation of a ‘vixen’, an attractive woman who knows how to play with her seductive power. To me, it smells nice and relaxing, perhaps a bit too simple at first. It opens with mandarin and ginger, soon giving way to the star rose. As it develops on the skin, it becomes a warm floral bouquet with woods and musk, where the rose captures its entire cycle: from fresh bud to wilting. It’s a dark red rose, a symbol of love and feminine beauty, with a touch more elegant than subtly perverse, like its inspiration. Christophe Raynaud goes for it without forcing oriental notes. It turns out beautiful but more elegant than simple. Moderate longevity on my skin.
That formula so copied by other brands here works perfectly: fresh, elegant, strong rose, fine musk and woods with a citrus touch at the start. It reminds me of one of Floraiku’s that I can’t quite recall now. A good fragrance, very feminine, but the price is madness, far too high for what it offers.
Has anyone noticed it smells exactly like Initio’s Atomic Rose? 🤔
