It opens with lots of spices over a slightly boozy base; dry and dark cardamomo. Then comes a flavoured tobacco with vanilla, very soft, amongst the spices. Powdery, with a homey sweetness but not sugary. Overall, it brings me the image of a banana cake (an association, not literal). Very pretty, discreet and cosy. Lasts 4-6 hours. Soft sillage.
I tried it today and it reminded me so much of a perfume I already owned, but I didn’t know which one. I looked it up here and yes, it’s 90% Princess by Kilian. Very similar, but better. This one is better crafted; the scent is rounder and less ‘bland’. And it lasts longer. In short, it’s the adult and improved version of ‘I don’t need a prince by my side to be a princess’.
Changing Constance by Penhaligon’s is an excellent gourmand. The caramel isn’t synthetic or cloying; it blends brilliantly with the rest. It opens sweet and spicy, lightly spiced by the cardamomo, but suggestive from the start. It evolves into a lovely vanilla and that touch of salt which confuses some, adding complexity and preventing it from being heavy. As it dries down, the scent becomes round, caramelised and seductive, inviting you to get closer. I see it as unisex, perfect for night and dates. Good performance; it’s expensive but worth it. It reminds me a lot of Minuit et Demi by FdB, but it has its own sparkle and deserves to be tried. Note: 8/10.
Despite the reputation of poor performance, I bought the sample at Le Secret du Marais because I had to get to know it. Although the performance is terrible, I have no regrets. It’s a very intimate sweet and spiced gourmand. It carries a delicious cardamomo, one of my favourite notes, mixed with the stickiest salty caramel and warm vanilla. The salt isn’t sharp; it gives it a special touch. A little sweet, salty and spiced. I don’t detect any tobacco. It’s often compared to Princess by Kilian, which I know well, but they aren’t very similar beyond both being sweet and intimate. It would be like changing the marshmallow for salty caramel and adding spices, which makes it more unisex and adult. To me, it’s closer to Lune Feline because of that cardamomo and ambered vanilla. It’s soft, sophisticated, sensual and cosy. The bad part is that it has no sillage and the longevity is ridiculous, about three hours. My family couldn’t smell it even if they pressed their nose against my neck. So bad is it. I wouldn’t buy it for that; it seems like throwing money away, although I’ll check out Perfumes Martínez’s inspiration which is said to perform well.

Finally tried the Penhaligon’s line; everyone raves about the scent, so I looked up the ingredients. Cardamom and vanilla gave me hope despite my hatred of tobacco in perfumes. But I didn’t like it 🙁 Upon leaving, it reminded me slightly of Lune Feline due to those two notes, but soon the pepper became overpowering and masked everything. By 15-20 minutes, the tobacco dominated the bottle, leaving only a sharp, strong smell. Nothing impactful, no wow factor, not gourmand, and certainly not memorable. The worst part is that after an hour and a half, it smells like nothing, so I don’t think it’s worth the price. Rating: 5/10
Finally, I went to discover the Penhaligon’s line and so many people talk about how well this fragrance smells that I researched the ingredients. The cardamomo and vanilla encouraged me despite the fact that I hate tobacco in fragrances at all. But I didn’t like it: in the opening it reminded me a bit of Lune Feline, due to the vanilla and cardamomo, but quickly the intensity of the pepper overwhelmed the cardamomo and vanilla completely, and after 15-20 minutes the tobacco took over everything and I only perceived a strong, spicy tobacco. I didn’t find it anything impactful, nor wow, nor gourmand, nor memorable. The worst is that after about an hour and a half it disappeared from the dry down, so I don’t think it’s worth it for what it costs. Rating: 5/10.
I love it; I still don’t have it due to the price issue… (you have to think about it a lot) but I know it will eventually come down. It’s like having Christmas in a bottle: those days of baking gingerbread cookies with spices, golden dust, eating pancakes with syrup and butter, and drinking chai latte.
Changing Constance makes me furious… because I love its fragrance but its performance is one of the worst I’ve tried… Regarding the fragrance itself: It’s exquisite, well-made, you can feel the quality of the ingredients. I feel it caramelised, but not a super sweet caramel, just the right amount of sweetness. I also feel it salty, like a salted caramel. I also detect a spicy and smoky touch. It’s a warm and beautiful, elegant scent. Now comes my problem: it has no trail at all; when I say no, I mean it’s skin-scent only, I can’t even smell it on myself. I had to lean in close to the skin to smell it. Duration? Perhaps it reached 3 hours. Of course, all this was on my skin chemistry. What a pity because it’s an exquisite fragrance that I would have bought without hesitation, but if I can’t enjoy it myself, it’s not worth it given how expensive it is. No one is going to walk around life leaning their wrist to their nose to enjoy it. Luckily I tried it with a sample, and I’m sorry it has such poor performance.
An impressive perfume; it gave me the sensation it could be a flanker like Baccarat Rouge ‘for men’. I thought it ideal for those who love this aroma but don’t see themselves wearing it because they find it too feminine; all the notes accompanying the caramel give it more presence (especially the cardamomo), and although it remains sweet, it moves it towards a more masculine territory, similar to what 1 Million does with amber and cinnamon. It has intoxicated me, and although we were heading towards summer, I wanted to buy the bottle on the spot. Luckily, I went for a walk around the shopping centre and realised it barely lasts; its performance, as many say, is scarce, so it’s a resounding no for me. Nevertheless, it’s among the best I’ve heard, a spectacular scent.

Delicious aroma but very scarce. It really lasts very little; not recommended to pay so much. A similar version in its opening and heart, spicy-citrus and slightly sweet, is ‘Flame de Cuban’, at a much lower price and with better longevity.
Spiced caramel with a vanilla dry down, but not just any vanilla: it’s an elegant and very easy-to-wear vanilla. My favourite; I wear it all year round despite its potent scent and comments that it’s more for cool days.
My favourite perfume. I love it from start to finish, from the opening to the dry down. 100% personal enjoyment, although it doesn’t have much trail, it doesn’t bother me at all; it’s for me. I ordered a decant to try it and ended up buying the bottle because it’s an addictive aroma. I thought it would be sweeter due to the praline and vanilla, and I was wary of that tobacco note and the black pepper, but here all the notes are in perfect harmony, delicious without overpowering each other. Wonderful aroma, 10/10, my top and favourite.
My favourite perfume. I love it from start to finish, from the opening to the dry down. 100% personal enjoyment although it doesn’t have much sillage and I’m not bothered by that; for me, it’s personal. I ordered a decant to try it and ended up buying the bottle because it’s addictive. I thought it would be sweeter due to the praline and vanilla and I was scared of the tobacco and black pepper, and here all the notes are in perfect harmony, delicious without overpowering each other. Wonderful scent 10/10, my top and favourite.
A refreshed autumnal combination. If I hadn’t seen the notes, I’d say it smells of nuts and ambroxan, what a simplistic way to put it? What I mean is that it feels fresh and youthful on one side, yet warm and vanilla-infused on the other. Everything is well blended, with no single note dominating, which is very good. On my skin, it lasts about 7 hours.
This perfume is a true exquisite. Yesterday I went to a perfumerie to buy Silky Woods by Goldfield & Banks and, as always, I tried several. There was a scent I couldn’t stop smelling all afternoon; it was exquisite and addictive; I was completely in love. It was Changing Constance. As I always do when I like something, I looked for reviews. Many praised it, but also complained about poor performance. This put me off at first, but thinking about it, I concluded why deprive myself of something that had me head over heels. I thought perhaps it wasn’t for night outs where it would be noticed from afar, but for enjoying in intimacy. And here I am, with Changing Constance, the new addition to my collection.
Changing Constance is one of my absolute favourites from the entire collection. A magical scent for spice lovers, housed in a dreamy bottle. The opening is vibrant and cheerful, with generous amounts of cardamomo and a peculiar touch of pepper that makes it unique. Almost from the start, you can detect caramel, sweet yet balanced with a hint of salt. The base is a silky, warm vanilla. To me, it’s a super lovely scent and I simply can’t stop wearing it. It’s true that after 2-3 hours the trail fades (and the price is high), but I believe it’s a tremendously sexy aroma, the kind that invites people to come closer without shouting. I enjoy that it’s not a beast, although I understand that for many the price isn’t justified. I would buy it a thousand times and invite everyone to try it.
Changing Constance, one of my favourites from the whole collection. A perfume for spice lovers, a magical scent in a dream bottle. It has a vibrant and cheerful opening, with huge amounts of cardamomo and a peculiar pepper note that makes it distinct. Almost from the start, the caramel is perceived, sweet but not too much thanks to the balance with the salt. The base is fundamentally vanilla, silky and warm. To me, it’s a super pretty scent and since I got it, I haven’t stopped wearing it. It’s true that the projection and sillage after 2-3 hours are low (and the price is high), however, I think it’s a tremendously sexy scent but not of the ones that shout, but of the ones that invite you to come closer. Personally, I enjoy that it’s not a beast, although I understand that for many the price isn’t justified. I would buy it a thousand times and invite everyone to try it.
I tried it again today; I do not know if they reformulated it or if the store bottle was well-macerated, but the performance improved considerably. A single spray on the shoulder was noticeable for 4-5 hours without anyone needing to lean in, and with even more merit because I was already wearing a potent, dense perfume. I will certainly investigate further; if the performance holds, I will buy a bottle. I am not much of a gourmand or sweet pastry fan, but I love this scent, not for daily wear, but to enjoy it from time to time. EDIT: The perfumer is Juliette Karagueuzoglou.
I do not know how to define it. It is sweet and spiced, very warm, perfect for a raw winter day or night, although the spice also works well in autumn.
Spiced and vanilla-scented. Very sweet. I would only wear it on very special occasions. It is fine to try women’s fragrances; they seem genderless, but in my experience, they are not. You can adapt it to your terrain, but it has a feminine heart. There is a faint hint of iris as it dries, which improves the overall impression.
It smells of autumn, warm and sweet. The salted caramel blend is striking and pleasant.
It smells delicious and different, but it disappears in less than 30 minutes. Far too expensive for such poor longevity.
I will not say more: it is delicious and rich, but the longevity is dreadful. It is not worth spending so much on something that lasts only an hour.
What a fraud! I understand the perfume is delicious, the opening is very good and the dry down is better. The opening reminds me of classics like Gentleman Réservé Privé and MIB, and perhaps in the dry down it becomes more feminine, but come on, I see it as totally unisex. The problem is that it doesn’t project; truly, it doesn’t project even 10cm from freshly sprayed and in 30 seconds it stays skin-scent only. I’m writing this review on my mobile and I can’t smell it; I’ve asked people and nobody smells it unless they press their nose against me. I don’t know, I think a perfume house shouldn’t sell a perfume like this. It annoys me to write such a review because the scent is wonderful, but I truly don’t recommend it to anyone.
What a fraud! The perfume is delicious, with a good opening and dry-down. It reminds me of classics like Gentleman Reserve Privé or MIB, and as it dries, it becomes more feminine, yet it is totally unisex. The problem is that it projects not even 10 cm when freshly applied; within 30 seconds, it sits right on the skin. As I write this review, I cannot smell it; no one around me can detect it unless they press their nose against my skin. I do not know; I think a perfumery house should not sell this. It frustrates me to write this because it smells wonderful, yet I cannot recommend it to anyone.
It smells absolutely delicious, of toasted hazelnuts and Christmas caramel, but I must be honest: the projection and sillage are weaker than a sparrow’s fart.
Smells delicious, like candied nuts, Christmas caramel, but I must give my honest opinion: it lasts and projects more than a sparrow’s fart.
Changing Constance EDP by Penhaligon’s. Even the name is contradictory, and for me, that contradiction has never been so perfect. At first, it is spicy, peppery, and sweet; that sweetness lingers throughout. Salted caramel with vanilla, wrapped in spices and a light smoke. It has a childish touch yet is incredibly sexy without trying to be. The evolution tells Constance’s story: birth with the freshness of cardamom and the piquancy of pepper; childhood hoarding candies and sweat from games; and adult life, a woman who smokes a pipe without losing her grace, with vanilla on her skin. Her aim is to be herself, regardless of what others say. Only those who seek her out will appreciate her, as her trail is soft and delicate. The goat from the Portraits collection is my platonic love; the price once forbade it, but when a special someone gifted it to me, the moments were unforgettable. However, it is not my fragrance of choice. It is a love letter written in a touching hand, but the stroke is insecure and the ink, easily erased. If you wear it for important occasions, you will be disappointed.
Gourmands and I simply do not get along. It is essentially a salted caramel with dulce de leche and spices; it smells lovely, but I cannot see myself wearing it. Nothing more to add.
