Antique Niche has unveiled Viola, an Oriental Fougère crafted for both men and women. Composed by Bertrand Duchaufour, this new release lands in 2026 with a character that feels both familiar and intriguingly dark.
The perfume opens with a bright, spicy surprise, then settles into a mossy, balsamic warmth. It is a fougère in spirit, but one that borrows the depth and sensuality of oriental perfumery.
Top notes of bergamot, basil and nutmeg set the tone: the citrus is fresh and slightly sharp, the basil brings a clean, herbal note, and the nutmeg adds an immediate, gentle fire.
Lavender, balsam fir and patchouli form the heart. Lavender supplies the understood fougère code, while the fir and patchouli push the composition towards woodier, more resinous territory. The middle stage feels dense, almost forest-like, but never heavy-handed.
The base relies on labdanum, benzoin and oakmoss. Labdanum gives a golden, leathery depth; benzoin wraps the drydown in soft, sweet balsams; and oakmoss grounds it all with an earthy, mossy texture that lasts.
Duchaufour’s layout is precise: a vibrant opening, a shadowed heart, and a base that glows with resin and earth. The Oriental Fougère label fits, yet Viola never feels confined by its category.
