Can anyone imagine a floral musk woody unisex? Well, yes, and it’s this. At first you have rose, myrtle, and Italian cypress, something uncommon in fragrances, not something you smell every day. The base and middle notes are usual, but here the fragrance turns everything upside down. A totally nostalgic aroma. I love this fragrance as much as I love Jelena Jensen’s hips.

  • I’m grateful to Yulieta and Shiseido for this fragrance. Since joining F.com, it was on my ‘want’ list blindly, and now at last I can try it. On my skin, it smells of rosewood and very soft myrtle. I feel as though everything is crushed and contained in a chest of rose and amber which, when opened, releases an effluvium of myrtle and rose, cypress, cedar, sandalwood, and fine spices… it conveys something spiritual, ancestral, romantic. I can imagine a love story suspended in time, the sensation of holding hands. It’s not fresh, nor warm; I’d say it’s ‘lukewarm’ and comforting, like a warm bath or the gesture of someone giving you warmth in cold wind. At first it’s light, and as it settles it intensifies gradually (due to the soft musk noticeable after a while). I agree with Shiseido that it’s ‘nostalgic’, not by sentiment, but by reference. I like it; it’s a very lovely unisex, like a private toilet water, excellent for couples. Now I want it knowingly.

  • There are people who analyse products without looking at the price; that’s not my case, I see it as a chimera. For me, it’s a suspense. It smells good, yes, and if you like dry wood, even half-smoked, you might love it, but the performance seems very poor for the cost. I understand it’s personal, but that’s how reviews are, hehe.

  • A very oriental therapeutic aroma, somewhat antisocial for being alone and relaxing, or with someone you trust in a meditative and transcendent situation. I definitely have the EDP; it seems extraordinary and necessary in my collection.

I tried a sample of Diptyque and, as always with them, you have to wait for the scent to evolve before forming an opinion. Don’t judge it instantly; leave it for a few minutes and it will tell you where it’s heading. I’m a fan of the brand and own several in my collection, but this Tam Dao becomes more intense after 10 minutes, fresher at the opening. Then it takes on that resinous, musky air; I don’t get the floral notes, but I still like it. Longevity is 8-9, sillage is 8, ideal for those seeking non-intense perfumes, although this one certainly is. I give it a total 9.

Testing a sample of Diptyque… with them, you have to wait for it to evolve; don’t judge at once. Give it a few minutes to see where it’s going. It hasn’t hit me yet; I see it as a softer version of Encre Noir. Since it’s woody and not my thing, I won’t say more. The quality and craftsmanship are definitely there. Goodbye.

  • Briefly, after reading the reviews… it doesn’t seem nostalgic to me. It’s a modern woody oriental. An excellent cedar combined with rosewood and sandalwood that gives it a dry and slightly sharp nuance. It’s completely unisex for those who like woody orientals and it’s not warm; it’s striking and for personal enjoyment. It lacks negative points. Good longevity and moderate sillage (it’s an EDT). It looks good as a signature fragrance in people of all ages who like different and exotic perfumes. A complex, woody fragrance with a bohemian cut. I liked it.

  • I won’t discuss the notes; you can check them here. I’ll tell you what it conveys to me: it’s beautiful. A white, fine, and delicate scent. It’s not citrusy, sweet, or floral, but of such fine and elegant powderiness that just smelling it, you’ll know what I mean. It’s elegant, delicate, and subtle, a true beauty.

  • It reminds me of Fields At Nightfall by Zara, surely due to the sandalwood. I see it as an elegant, good-taste fragrance, unadorned and sober. I agree with those who say it’s a ‘warm’ scent; I think that’s the perfect word to summarise that collection of woods. Always a Diptyque fan 🙂

  • It reminds me a lot of Fields At Nightfall by Zara, probably due to the sandalwood. I see it as elegant, good taste, unadorned and sober. I agree that it’s ‘warm’, a word that sums up the feeling of this woodsy ensemble well. Always a fan of Diptyque.

  • I discovered it when I ‘borrowed’ a decant from my grandmother. Karma is cruel: my partner ‘borrowed’ it and made it their signature, saying it reminds them of their grandfather. I fell in love with the green woods of this EDT. The opening is spicy, with cedar and cypress that smell like a woodcutter, but it softens into a wet, creamy sandalwood. The performance is excellent (easily 12 hours), with strong projection for three hours before settling to skin scent. Totally unisex, complex yet simple, ideal for any season or informal occasion. For me, a lover of woods, the only flaw is that it smells better on my partner than on me. Pleasant: 10/10, Interesting: 5/10, Versatile: 9/10, Original: 6/10.

  • I borrowed a decant of Tam Dao from my grandmother, and what karma: my partner stole it to make it his own, claiming it smells like his grandfather. I went crazy for those green woods in the EdT: it starts with spiced cedar and cypress that smells like a woodcutter, but then it settles into a damp, creamy sandalwood. It lasted easily 12 hours, with strong projection for three hours before settling close to the skin. It’s unisex and uncomplicated, perfect for informal or semi-formal days. For me, a lover of woods, the only flaw is that it smells much better on my partner than on me. Pleasant: 10/10 Interesting: 5/10 Versatile: 9/10 Original: 6/10

It’s a very pretty perfume, smelling quite of sandalwood. But it’s great because it’s fresh and light, not that suffocating incense-style sandalwood. And it’s nicely powdery at the end. Although the notes aren’t typical for a fresh scent, it’s very wearable even for daytime.

  • OhJuliet

There are perfumes that you love at first sniff and buy, only to find them nauseating at home. Others seem overhyped, yet you finish the bottle. Tam Dao is the latter. I tried a sample and thought: ‘meh, not that great’. It smells like a Swedish psychologist in a Bergman film: stately, not sexy, not Mediterranean. Exquisite but intellectual. A few days later, desperately searching for the sample among my 20 perfumes, I discovered it calms me to sleep. It’s perfect for connecting with yourself, almost spiritual. Would I buy it? Without a doubt. It works well at weddings or interviews, but it’s a must-have for wearing alone.

  • Juanpasiones

It smells incredible, but the longevity and projection are so poor it’s like a sparrow’s fart.

  • I’m not looking for forgiveness, but before judging, walk in my shoes. I stumbled upon this sandalwood by chance, tired of smelling like everyone else. It’s introspective, modern, and timeless, much like Depeche Mode. If you love woods, you’ll fall in love. Upon application, it smells of earth and grass, with an animalic touch reminiscent of elephants carrying logs through a forest. The musk and amber give it a strong, masculine vibe, like having soil in your hands. Then, it releases a feminine and sensual character thanks to the flowers and rosewood, mysterious and rich. The woods persist at the end, though the earthy sensation fades slightly. It doesn’t have a massive sillage; it’s for you and those close to you, not to make heads turn. It’s a dirty sandalwood that doesn’t shout but has its own identity.
