  1. Van Gils, that Dutch brand so unknown yet surprising. I know little about them: they have Classic pour homme and this Tendance pour homme, radically different and both are to my taste. Hermiel Cornelus Van Gils founded a clothing factory in the 40s, later made clothes for war victims, and in the 50s expanded to children and men. In the 70s they passed the company to their sons and in 1978 launched the Van Gils fashion brand, which grew until being sold in 1992. It is the only Dutch men’s perfume brand, with bold and deep fragrances. Tendance starts with a very punchy citrus: not a springtime bath citrus, but sharp, drastic, and slap-in-the-face. It hardly seems citrusy, but rather a fruity wood submerged in pineapple juice, bergamot, lime, and grapefruit. It seems to prepare a bacchanalian punch with melons, sour apples, gin, juniper, and pepper. Who would treat with such a refreshment of wine nights and roses? Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon would be pleased. It transports you to Manhattan clubs where bourbon triumphed during Prohibition. Tendance is a rough and potent perfume: mixing slick, masculine citrus tints like Tom Selleck with a devilish gaze of a Dorian Grey bathed in sinful flowers like geranium and woods like cedar, patchouli, and vanilla. Neither likes soft or prudent aromas. Tendance is a woody citrus with a thick, almost rusty carnal component. It is the perfume for Mephistopheles or Steven Marcato, not for Chanel or Balenciaga. It is drastic, potent, rough, pungent, dark red like blood sliding down lips that once were full of life, yet no less suggestive.

  2. Darkbeat

Reconnecting with this perfume after so long, and rereading myself, has made me reconsider what I had written about it, because I no longer feel it that way. We know that the sense of smell develops and we expand our olfactory horizons, so I have preferred to delete my previous review, which did not match what I currently perceive, and write this one with my new point of view. I like this perfume, but there have been moments when it reminded me of ‘1 Million’ by Paco Rabanne, and it bored me a little, luckily it changes afterwards, and although they still seem similar, they develop a bit differently. The opening is what I like most about the perfume; here it reminds me a bit of Desire for a Man by Alfred Dunhill, very fruity and fresh, but soon cinnamon appears and it starts to take on the tone of 1M, which lasts almost the whole life of the perfume, but with nuances that gradually take it away from Paco Rabanne’s proposal. Then, its fruity side fades, and floral notes emerge, along with a residual cinnamon tone. Here it still resembles 1M, but it is much finer and elegant, nothing strident. The final dry-down of the fragrance, when the initial cinnamon sweetness began to fade, reveals a plus of sweetness, vanilla-amber, finishing with a sweet, woody and resinous end with a sprinkling of floral notes. It is not bad at all, but the whiff of its clear inspiration bored me a little. The longevity is moderate-low; I wore it for about five hours on skin with a discrete trail almost from the start, and from the first hour it is close to the skin. Recommended for afternoons and evenings and cool climates, although being so inoffensive, it could be worn at any time and day of the year without problems.

I rediscovered this perfume after a long time, and upon smelling it again, I felt my previous opinion no longer fit. As our sense of smell evolves, I deleted my old review and wrote this from my new perspective. I like it, although at first it reminded me a bit of Paco Rabanne’s 1 Million and bored me; however, it then changes, and although they are similar, they develop differently. The opening is the best: very fruity and fresh, like Alfred Dunhill’s Desire for a Man, but soon cinnamon appears and takes on that 1M tone that lasts almost all day, albeit with nuances that gradually distance it. Then the fruity notes fade and the flowers emerge with a touch of residual cinnamon; it still resembles 1M but is finer and more elegant, nothing strident. Finally, when the sweet cinnamon fades, a plus of vanilla and amber appears, finishing with a sweet, woody, resinous close with a floral touch. It’s not bad, but that clear inspiration bored me a little. The longevity is low to moderate: I can smell it on my skin for 5 hours with a discrete trail from the start and then close to the skin. Recommended for afternoons and evenings or cooler climates, but being so inoffensive, it can be worn at any time of day without issue.

  4. I really like this fragrance. It brings me memories of D&G ‘The One’ but sweeter. From the opening to the end, it seems to me an attractive, romantic and seductive aroma. Ideal for use on cold days, preferably for night outings. Although it does not clash at all in work environments. In hot weather it can result in being heavy, although I insist, night outings, discos, etc., are its thing in my opinion. It allows over-application without problems. Longevity and trail are moderate, unless you apply generously, in which case the first hour is of a heavy trail. I did not know this brand, it was a pleasant surprise.

  5. I absolutely love this fragrance. It brings me memories of D&G The One but sweeter. From the opening to the dry down, it is an attractive, romantic, and seductive scent. Ideal for cold days and nights out, although it doesn’t clash at all at work. In heat, it can feel heavy, but for clubs or nights out, it is perfect. It allows generous application without problems; if you apply it liberally, the first hour has a strong trail, but afterwards it becomes moderate. I didn’t know the brand, and it was a pleasant surprise.
