  • In the Perfume version (16%), the animal notes emerge quickly before yielding to a musky base. The result is a velvety blend that, however, doesn’t lose its category for the season; its complexity reveals itself in the middle and base notes, which take time to emerge but are worth the wait. They aren’t simple musks, but distinct facets revolving around the same theme, persisting from the grassy notes to the very end. It’s a subtle fragrance that shines on the skin for quite some time if applied discreetly. In the strict sense, it’s unisex: feminine due to its complexity, masculine due to its reserve, thus dismissing perfumes with too much presence. In short, one of the best blends from Fueguia.

If we want to re-present a whale olfactorily, there’s no other option but to revolve around ambergris: a precious note, but with a raw and disgusting origin. It’s a secretion manufactured by sperm whales to protect themselves from the hard parts of squids they can’t digest; they mix fat and cholesterol to cushion intestinal damage. When expelled, it’s black, viscous, and smells like vomit, but as it oxidises in the air and sun, it turns white and its aroma softens until it becomes exquisite. Its main component, ambroxan, as it degrades, releases unmistakable volatile compounds. Ambergris has always been a luxury, used in rituals or as an aphrodisiac, and today it’s key in perfumery. Its scent is sweet, musty, marine, and with that soft, sensual animal touch. Ballena de la Pampa carries soft musk, making it seductive but not aggressive; thanks to the hay, it’s refined and subtle. I imagine it golden and luminous, transmitting serenity and melancholy, like the residual scent of two satisfied bodies resting on a deserted beach after making love. Scent: 8/10 Trail: 6/10 Longevity: 6/10 Versatility: 8/10

If we want to represent a whale olfactorily, there’s no turning back: ambergris. It’s a substance created by sperm whales to protect themselves from the hard parts of squids they can’t digest; it’s a fatty secretion that initially smells foul, but as it oxidises with the sun and air, it becomes an exquisite aroma. It’s the ‘whale vomit’ that turns into ‘floating gold’. Its scent is sweet, musty, and marine, with a sensual and explicit animal touch. Ballena de la Pampa carries soft musk and hay that balance it, making it refined and subtle. I imagine it golden and luminous, generating serenity and melancholy, like the residual scent of two satisfied bodies resting on a deserted beach after making love. Scent: 8/10 Trail: 6/10 Longevity: 6/10 Versatility: 8/10

  • To be honest, I’ve been obsessed with smelling everything I can afford for years, and Fueguia 1833 changed my life. I went from being a curious collector to a critical lover of olfactory art. This house has my signature scent, Muskara Phero J, but every year I visit their shop in Milan convinced of finding another masterpiece to enrich my olfactory memory and make me feel alive. Ballena de la Pampa is sweet and salty, that gourmet combo with many detractors. On my skin, it features dry tobacco notes with a slight greenness and honey that enhance its power without overpowering it. If the honey in Muskara Apis saturates you, this is less carnal, more versatile, and has a salty touch. It’s a human carnality, pleasurable and addictive, without algae or animals, just a dangerous blend of honey and ambergris. The performance is out of this world; ignore Fragrantica’s notes and head to the official website.

  • I’ll be objective about one of my favourite fragrances from my favourite house. I’ve had this overwhelming passion for years to smell everything I can afford. Fueguia 1833 marked a before and after: I went from being a curious collector to a true lover and critic of olfactory art. Although Muskara Phero J is my signature, every year I visit their shop in Milan convinced of finding another masterpiece to enrich my olfactory memory. Ballena de la Pampa is described as sweet and salty, a legendary combo. On my skin, dry tobacco with a slight greenness and honey predominate, accompanying its strength without overpowering it. If the honey in Muskara Apis seems too much to you, this is the less carnal and invasive option, with a salty touch that makes it versatile. It’s a human carnality, pleasurable and luxurious, wrapped in a dangerous but unique blend. The performance is out of this world. Forget Fragrantica’s notes and take a stroll on the house’s official website.
