Balmain de Balmain by Balmain Beauty is a chypre floral fragrance launched in 1998, designed for women. Its olfactive pyramid unfolds with top notes of galbanum, rosebuds, bergamot and pepper; a heart of iris, rose, violet and jasmine; and a base of oakmoss, vetiver, patchouli and sandalwood.

As soon as you uncork it, I say: this is fine! You feel the artistic stamp of Balmain’s 90s. The projection is bestial, as Gaby said, and will leave no one indifferent. It is a potent chypre with lots of galbanum, which is exactly what I was looking for, mixed with acidic and mossy flowers where the rose reigns, alongside casia, patchouli, and sandalwood very deep in the base. It is uncommon, not heavy, not opulent, and not refined; it is wearable and adaptable. To explain: it is not a dessert, a snack, a tapa, nor a chef’s signature dish; it is a hearty main course that is tasty, fine, and well-made. It satisfies those who know how to eat well, although it has a certain common touch. It is timeless, difficult to pigeonhole by season or attire (though not for the gym). If you like it, wear it and that’s it; it can be the badge of honour for whoever wears it. The longevity is good, and to my taste, it smells richer with time as the trail fades slightly. I would avoid it in heat, although I could wear it without issues, and I don’t see it for cold weather either, that’s what I hope! hehe.

It is not a fragrance for everyone, yet it is not heavy or opulent; it is wearable and adaptable. To explain: it is a hearty main course that is tasty, fine, and well-made. It is not a snack, an appetiser, nor a chef’s signature dish, but something that satisfies those who know how to eat well. It is timeless, difficult to pigeonhole into an era or outfit (except perhaps for the gym). If you like it, wear it and that’s it; it can be the badge of honour for whoever adopts it. The longevity is good, and for me, it smells richer with time as the trail fades slightly. I would avoid it in heat, although it could be worn, and I don’t see it for extreme cold either. That’s what I hope! hehe.

  • Balmain de Balmain smells fresh, though it initially overwhelms you. Like with Azuriiita, it becomes more pleasant as it dries down and the flowers emerge, particularly the rose, which was initially masked by potent galbanum, oakmoss, and vetiver. The dry-down is an experience, a return to the missing classics of the chypre family. Perhaps due to the dryness of the woody notes or the pepper, it evokes a green forest without rain. That’s why many see it as masculine, but don’t let that deter you from this marvel. It has that exuberant yet distinguished touch of Balmain’s great classics. Like Jolie Madame, it is an explosion of aromas to intoxicate, but with a very elegant Anglo-Saxon restraint. From the start until nearly the end, it oscillates between animalic and clean, even smelling of quality herbal soap. I discovered it was created by Antoine Maisondieu, who later did magic with Eloge du Traître and Fat Electrician, and gave that green touch to the rose in Paul Smith. It is worth seeking online now that it is discontinued. Green, bitter, intense, yet luminous and transparent… unique.

  • Balmain de Balmain is fresh, though initially overwhelming. Like with Azuriiita, it improves as it dries down and I begin to notice the flowers, especially the rose, which was initially hidden by galbanum, oakmoss, and vetiver. The dry-down is an experience, a return to the missing chypres. Perhaps due to the astringent air of the woody notes or the pepper, there is a certain dryness, like a green forest without rain. That is why it appears masculine, but it is not the typical one that would deter me from this marvel. It has that exuberant yet distinguished touch of Balmain’s classics. Like Jolie Madame, it is an aromatic explosion, but with restraint, an Anglo-Saxon self-control. From the start until nearly the end, it moves between the animalic and the cleanliness of astringent and clean notes; it even smells of quality herbal soap. I discovered it was created by Antoine Maisondieu, who later did magic with Eloge du Traître and Fat Electrician, and gave that green and woody touch to the rose in Paul Smith. I must discover more of his work. Now that it is discontinued but can be found online at a good price, it is worth having. There are few perfumes like this: green, bitter, intense, luminous, and unique.
