  A fougère with citrus and herbs that smells classy. It reminds me of PR Pour Homme, Guy Laroche Horizon, and Jacques Bogart. The blend is lovely, but it lacks punch: it lasts about six hours and the trail is very timid. In that case, I’d go for a Bogart Signature instead, as Basile Uomo costs twice as much and performs the same. It was a good blind buy, but I won’t repurchase it for longevity, unless I can find a good vintage.

  Italian perfumery offers a lot to those with the time and desire to search. Basile Uomo is an old-school classic with plenty of personality, similar to Grigioperla, a fragrance that saves money without losing quality or depth. It seems this scent seeks strong emotions and then protects them, a simple yet original creation. If you like this style, it’s a safe gift: it opens with galbanum, basil, grapefruit, and orange, with a heart of cloves, cinnamon, and rose. It closes with sandalwood, moss, and leather, giving it a potent masculine edge. Basile Uomo is solid, with that eighties charisma and good quality for the price. Proof that the two go well together.

  At first, the herbs dominate strongly: thyme, rosemary, basil, and citron. Among the citrus, the grapefruit stands out. In the middle, I notice more of the spices: nutmeg and cloves. The finish is lovely with oakmoss, soft leather, and sandalwood. The style recalls Puig’s Quorum (especially in the middle and finish), but it is more herbal than citrus at the start and has less leather. It’s a softer, more polished version of that Quorum. I see it as a good example of an old-school chypre, without sweetness for the young. The trail can be heavy if you overapply, but generally it’s moderate; it’s noticeable well for the first four or five hours, then it clings to the skin, lasting over 10 hours on me. Despite the spices, I don’t find it warm enough for winter or fresh enough for summer, so I see it best for intermediate seasons. It’s formal and for daytime wear.
