Café del Mar is an odd perfume in its evolution within a scent type I’ve encountered before, for example in Renier’s Havana 500, where they combine coffee with a marine accord. Here, the result is much better than expected, with a very pleasant sweetness and textures that are somewhat rough due to the declared ‘sand’. However, at times the seaweed note becomes a bit plastic, which hinders the experience slightly and makes the quality seem lower. Nevertheless, the perfume evolves quite well, ending with a slightly fruity accord, a somewhat creamy coffee, and a velvety marine base. The wearing experience is generally good, and I believe its originality gives it a point in its favour within the brand. I see it as unisex and slightly more suitable for heat than cold. I recommend trying it and drawing your own conclusions. Rating: 7.5/10 (tested from the brand’s Discovery Set).

Café del Mar is a curious evolution within the café-marine genre, a concept I’ve seen before in Renier’s Havana 500. Here, the result surpasses expectations: a very pleasant sweetness with rough textures from the sand, though the seaweed note sometimes sounds a bit plastic and lowers the perceived quality. Fortunately, it evolves beautifully into a creamy coffee with a velvety marine base and fruity touches. Overall, it’s a good experience and its originality earns it points within the brand. I see it as unisex and more suited to heat than cold. My advice: give it a try and draw your own conclusions. Rating: 7.5/10 (tested from Discovery Set).

Fresh and smelling of a hot summer day, like an afternoon on a hotel terrace by the sea sipping a tequila margarita. It starts very fresh with lavender and juicy green apple, not acidic but with a sweet touch. Within minutes, the heart phase arrives: vanilla, ambergris, a salty hint, and a barely perceptible coffee base that is hard to detect. In the end, only that sweet, ambered blend of lavender and ambergris remains. In summary, it’s a correct, playful, and nothing-breaking perfume, yet very pleasant. It has a moderate trail and lasts about 8 hours on my skin. Ideal for wearing as you please in spring and summer. Scent: 9/10, Trail: 8.5/10, Projection: 8/10, Longevity: 8/10.

The opening of Monegal Café del Mar is slightly citrusy with hints of fruit and that rough, bitter sensation of a weak coffee, which I believe is more residual and serves as a companion to the fruity cocktail at the start. It isn’t sugary despite the slight natural sweetness of the green apple, which is barely perceptible but very pleasant. I don’t perceive the seaweed note as such; perhaps it’s a success not to elevate it, as it’s usually a challenging note. A few minutes later, the fruity development with blue tints recalls more versatile fragrances than a pure summer scent; here there is no bronzer or heavy coconut. In my view, it is the most versatile and masculine of Monegal’s summer trio. As it dries down, the sweetness fades and it becomes a bit powdery, with a masculine lavender and a very contained ambergris that gives a pleasant dirty touch, almost like incense reinforcing the masculinity. It finishes with warm ambered touches and a muted vanilla after 8 or 9 hours, with moderate projection. To summarise: it’s a blue, versatile scent, perfect for any occasion and weather, very well made and with great acceptance (my wife loves it). If you’re looking for something marine, summery, and challenging, this isn’t for you.
