The Fort & Manle discovery set has arrived and caught me off guard. I expected a dominant rose with sweet base notes, akin to Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir, but here the sweet notes take centre stage: chocolate, pear and amber. It’s like caramelised pear and chocolate pudding with a hint of rose water, a pure gourmand. It dries down very much like Pure Distance’s Black, and the opening reminds me of Francesca Bianchi fragrances. The only downside is the performance; I expected better. The longevity is decent (6-7 hours) but the projection is very soft. I see it as unisex and perfect for cool nights. Overall rating: 9.5

The opening is brutal: it smells like wet nappies, haha, absolutely awful on my skin. But after 5-10 minutes, what a beauty! It transforms into a warm, chocolatey, rose scent, cosy, earthy and powdery, then becomes fruity, almost like choco-banana, very pleasant. I’ve seen comparisons with Tom Ford’s Noir de Noir, which is good, but this fragrance’s dry-down wins out. It reminds me of the rose in Bond No. 9’s Westside and the peace of Tom Ford’s Noir Pour Femme, plus it has that truffle warmth of Black Orchid. Too bad about the opening; for the price, I wouldn’t buy it again because it’s unpleasant at first 🙁

White chocolate, rose and pear. Although they aren’t listed in the ingredients, the blend makes you feel they are there. The opening smells of white flowers and osmanthus; I detect champaca and it overwhelms me. For someone who isn’t usually a fan of white florals, it horrified me and I thought it would turn to rot. Mistake. When the vanilla and other sweet notes kick in, it transforms into white chocolate with roses and white flowers forming a fabulous chorus: rich, appealing, edible and sensual. Projection of two metres for six hours, then it clings to the skin. I love it and, luckily, it’s mine now. Rating: 9
