Constantinople by Penhaligon's is an aromatic spicy fragrance for men and women. Launched in 2021, this composition was created by Christophe Raynaud and Marie Salamagne. • A unisex fragrance that smells like a rugged man. To me, 100%, I can’t see any woman wearing this. At first it’s typical and dense, a classic men’s perfume. After a few minutes the different notes emerge and it becomes much fresher. You can really detect the vanilla and pepper, and with a bit more time it gains florality. I’m not a professional when it comes to describing perfumes, but the price seems excessive for the scent it offers. I don’t find it particularly special. It does evolve, which I appreciate, but… no, thanks.

  • They said it was unisex, yet it smells intensely masculine. At first, it’s dense and typical, nothing like a woman wearing it. After a few minutes, fresh notes emerge, with vanilla and pepper becoming apparent, followed by the florals. I’m not an expert, but the price seems excessive for what it smells like. It does evolve over time, which I appreciate, but no, thank you; it’s not quite special enough.

  • At first, a spicy kick of pungent spices that screams ‘Arabian’; if you’re used to the oriental genre, you won’t be surprised—it smells like Lattafa clones for under £30. But then the magic happens: sweetness takes control with caramelised vanilla and a spice-laden rum that masculinises it, like those festive mulled wines from central Europe. It’s not cloying; it has a gourmet touch. Unlike other orientals in my collection, the Penhaligon one doesn’t overwhelm; it feels elegant, like a caress rather than a slap, with no harsh edges. It lasts through a full workday without needing reapplication and leaves a trail until morning coffee. Perhaps it won’t surprise the experts, but its quality and evolution are extraordinary. The official notes don’t quite match my experience, as every skin and nose interprets it differently.

  • Upon applying it, a rush of spicy notes hits, and I think: ‘this is Arabic’. If you’re accustomed to oriental scents, you won’t be surprised; it smells like many Lataffa fragrances for under €30. That initial disappointment fades as the sweetness develops: caramelised vanilla with a rum-laden spice profile, very masculine, reminiscent of those Christmas punch drinks from Central Europe. It’s not cloying; it has something gourmet. Unlike other orientals I own, the Penhaligon’s doesn’t overwhelm; it’s elegant, a caress rather than a slap. It lasts through a workday without needing reapplication and leaves a trail until my mid-morning coffee break. Perhaps it won’t surprise the connoisseurs, but its quality and evolution are extraordinary. The notes don’t quite align with my experience; everyone smells it differently depending on their skin.
