It seems deceptive at first; it smells ‘cheap’ (in quality, not price), but when you concentrate, it’s better than it appears. I don’t understand why it’s called ‘Oriental Woody’; I perceive it as ‘Citrus Aromatic’. Ginger, patchouli, and citrus are noticeable, even to non-expert noses. The blend of lavender and Virginia juniper gives it that typical ‘American’ touch found in Calvin Klein or Perry Ellis. It’s both its flaw and its strength: very common notes. Watch the evolution of the orange. Why not have something cheap and similar? It has potential. When perfume runs low in your wardrobe, a ‘perfumed habano’ like this saves the day. If you’re like me, you enjoy the easy-going aroma of American fragrances. As long as it exists, it’s a staple in my collection.

I’d like to add that in the New York by Cuba Paris (for gentlemen), Fragrantica compares it to Acqua di Gio and Bvlgari Aqva (to me, it reminds me of Aramis Havana and a flanker of CK Eternity Summer). It’s true, I don’t know the Polo Blue, but it resembles those two. It’s a citrus aromatic (Fragrantica incorrectly labels it ‘Oriental Woody’). And I’ll go further: it’s the best fragrance from the entire Cuba Paris brand!

The opening is a typical fresh-citrus-wood American cologne, but as it dries down, it smells like Hugo Boss or Gucci Guilty. Very interesting; it gains an elegant, aromatic touch (lavender-fine wood) that lasts for a few hours. Then it drops close to the skin into a musk that feels like a well-worn good perfume. One reapplication gives you another two hours of joy. Excellent and economical price. Take one for home and another for the office.

A fragrance that takes you to a cloudy day in Manhattan, to work, and then to a Tom Collins in a bar. Effervescent and citrusy, ideal for autumn or spring on a daytime wear. Sillage: 4, Longevity: 6, Scent: 6, Price: 9, Overall: 6.

  • I stumbled upon this fragrance while searching for the discontinued San Salvador ‘Three’ EDT. The original was Italian, this one is French, but with those cigar-shaped bottles, it looks like they cloned the formula. They are identical. Yes, synthetic, but at this price, you forget about it. I love it, although it’s not the best in the heat. It confuses citrus with spice due to that dry heart; it’s more citrusy than spicy, and the blend is brilliant. Dry and smoky, without that annoying spiciness found in vintage woodies like Quorum. Virginia juniper and patchouli stand out as it dries down. If you’re looking for info on the San Salvador series, there’s a cedar, mandarin, and amber set. The woodiness comes from the cedar, but what makes it unique is that synthetic smoky touch.
