Duran Duran NeoRio by Xerjoff is an oriental fragrance for men and women. This creation, signed by master perfumer Alberto Morillas, was launched in 2025. Its olfactive pyramid unfolds with rum, fig, labdanum and elemi in the top notes; maple syrup, saffron and rose oil in the heart; and Peruvian balsam, patchouli and tonka bean in the base.

It’s the younger brother of Duran Duran, much more mischievous and playful; you can tell just by looking at the bottle’s colours. It features a very prominent fig, with fruity and sweet notes over a dark base, which I imagine comes from saffron and Peru Balsam. I think it’s one of those fragrances you either love or hate; it can be a bit strident, but if you’re looking for something different and want to turn heads, this is ideal.
I tried this launch yesterday, which had intrigued me. At first, I detected sweet fig mixed with rum and balsam. As it dried down, it became sweeter, more ambered, with a smoky touch. It gives a barbecue sensation, yet without losing its sweetness. The balsam always stands out on my skin. It’s ideal for very cold days or night outings. Just in case you’re wondering: yes, the four neon-coloured bottles have the same scent.
The first thing that comes to mind is black licorice; it smells exactly like that. Perhaps due to the fig and rum blend… It’s a special scent, dark and not for everyone. It’s voluptuous and nocturnal. The rum gives that amber warmth, enveloping everything in a velvety, sensual intoxication. The fig adds sweetness and juiciness, but it’s not a normal fig; it’s more like a fig soaked in rum. The star is Peru Balsam, which gives it body and maturity, while the myrrh adds the carnal, animalistic touch. The result is a mature, dense scent, only for the night and the cold. But exquisite.
At first, the alcohol hits a bit strong, but everything blends perfectly afterwards. The honey is the star, wrapping everything in warmth. The Xerjoff rum (just like in Monkey Special) goes a little over the top at the start, but since it fades quickly, the final mix is spectacular. Moderate projection, but it lasts a long time. Scent 8.5/10, Projection 7/10, Longevity 9/10. Total 8.2. It feels like comforting honey!
