About Edgars (Эдгар)
Dzintars Edgars: The 1985 Aromatic Fougère for Men
Dating from 1985, Dzintars' Edgars (Эдгар) is an aromatic fougère for men by nose Liesma Oše (Prūse).
Fresh herbs and lime give way to a drier, more traditional core of fern, lavender and tobacco, resting on moss and woods. It feels unmistakably Eighties in the best sense.
At the opening there is coriander alongside citrus notes and lime — green, zesty and faintly peppery, setting a crisp tone.
The middle brings fern, geranium and lavender together with tobacco and spiced notes. The effect is dry, herbal and distinctly masculine, with no modern sweetness.
Underneath, sandalwood, vetiver, oakmoss, musk and coumarin provide a creamy-woody, earthy base with a gentle powdery finish.
Aromatic, woody and earthy characters dominate, supported by fresh-spicy, citrus, powdery, musky and mossy nuances. Its score of 4.34 out of 5 based on 47 ratings underlines its standing amongst devotees of vintage masculines.
It will suit devotees of traditional fougères, collectors of Eastern European perfumery, and anyone who favours dry lavender, fern and oakmoss over contemporary sweetness.
Edgars remains a forthright period piece rather than a crowd-pleaser. Approached on its own terms, it offers a well-kept, mossy-woody fougère with genuine character.
