Tabú with its animalic and amber touch, 20 Carats with herbal and tobacco notes, and Emir with musk, woody and leather undertones. All three feature incense, though it is most prominent in Emir. Emir aimed to go further and delve deeper into the oriental character of Dana’s previous fragrances, achieving this with generous doses of woods, incense and leather. It still retains a floral side that remains present and plays off the other notes. The opening is slightly soapy before moving into the woods, incense and finally a shy yet interesting leather; I like that it is subtle because otherwise it would unbalance the composition. Just as Tabú was born inspired by sensuality and provocation, 20 Carats evokes luxury and jewels, Emir captures the essence of Persian high society and the warm, aromatic nights of Arabia. It is well known that a bottle of Emir was found among Frida Kahlo’s belongings, clearly seduced by the concept and scent of the fragrance, just as many other women were. Not surprisingly, she also used another creation by Monsieur Jean Carles, ‘Shocking’. An interesting proposal from Dana and essential for anyone who enjoyed Tabú and 20 Carats.
