It’s gone and never coming back… Today I went to the department stores and, not finding it, it caught my eye. There were Y, Yvresse, and In Love Again, but not Nu. I asked the YSL stand attendant and she confirmed that L’Oréal has withdrawn it definitively. There weren’t even testers, because when they discontinue something, they return all the units. What a disappointment, once again, L’Oréal’s treatment of the YSL brand. They’re not content with reformulating fragrances and releasing rubbish; they also continue the trend of withdrawing perfumes.
The NU Collection by YSL (2011) is a redesign of the original 2001 scent I hadn’t known, and it has won me over completely with an intoxicating aroma. I’m not sure if it’s still in the hands of Jacques Cavallier or if it’s a reworking, but it smells far more refined and classy than the original. To me, it’s an addictive oriental gourmand, a precursor to today’s trends but with far more elegance. The wordplay on ‘NU’ (naked in French) is completely undone because, when you wear it, you feel embraced and enveloped, nothing of nakedness. It begins with a gourmand touch and bergamot that fades quickly, leaving that sweet, amber base with incense and chocolate. It’s floral, chocolatey, and incensed in equal measure: a blend of dark roses, dense jasmine, orchid, and iris root that smells like luxury Orient, Dubai style but exclusive. The trail is discreet but lasts for ages. You can’t take your hand off your arm; it’s edible without being cloying, floral without being feminine or dizzying, and incensed without smelling like a church. It smells of ancient rites and bonfires, a red, dense cloud that is a velvet embrace of eternal love.
