  I’ve always had my doubts about YSL, and the first Parisienne didn’t strike me, but L’Extreme breaks that barrier. It’s a flanker with a reinvented image designed to catch the eye: the violet bottle gives off a dark, mysterious vibe, and the name suggests intensity, though reading it made me think of something sporty. The advertising featuring Kate Moss in Paris, paired with that Depeche Mode track, feels very stereotypical, typical of scents like Midnight Poison. Simplifying the Parisienne formula was a stroke of genius, especially for those who, like me, dislike that vinyl note which smells of household appliances. Pure blackberry opens with a sharp, aggressive touch before settling into a rose and violet blend reminiscent of shampoos or creams, very clean. It finishes with a discreet base of suede, vanilla, and a hint of patchouli and incense. The idea that a foreign house adopts the spirit of Paris rather than owning it fits the original concept perfectly, finally receiving the treatment it deserved after the mediocrity of the first. L’Extreme delivers on its promise of incredible trail and longevity. Philosophically, it could be a spark from YSL’s brilliant past, but time will tell if they continue to deserve their prestige or if they’ll pull out another flanker from the Black Opium range.
