  • The new ‘La Collection’ version of Rive Gauche supersedes L’Oréal’s discontinuation. It retains the charm of its predecessor, albeit slightly more basic but with very good performance. It’s closer to ‘Rive Gauche Intense’ than the original. It’s the only case in the men’s line that hasn’t worsened with the reformulation; on the contrary, it has come out looking better. Moderate longevity and trail, even better than before.

  • Absolutely disappointed… That’s how I feel about L’Oréal. I don’t understand how they managed to remove this fragrance. When they changed the bottles for La Collection, I knew a reformulation was on the cards. There was one. But I couldn’t have imagined they would annihilate Nu, nor that it would be the end of Rive Gauche. I hate the damage they do to designer perfumery: more expensive perfumes with less soul and biased ingredients. It’s already an abuse to price a fragrance at €110 for 80ml, when the 125ml ones previously cost half that. I hope the industry changes because it’s a disgrace to see what they’ve been doing for over a decade. This is a tribute to an exquisite fragrance they’ve cruelly taken away from us. We’ll see which one is next.

  • Hearing about this perfume, I knew it was ‘one of mine’. I’d never smelled it and although I was looking for it everywhere, I couldn’t find it. Until, by chance, while paying for another in a quirky shop, I saw it there, looking at me shyly on the shelf. I nearly rubbed my eyes. I went to try it and the rest is history. When you suspect something is going to be good and it confirms it, it’s wonderful. A sophisticated, soapy fougère with that barber-shop touch that radiates class and chivalry. Some smell it as responsible dad or grandfather, and I, at 35, can’t aspire to smell better with this. It’s a perception and a smile. I bought a refill bottle and every time I see it in a shop I’ll buy it again. I don’t want to live a day without being able to indulge in this craving. It’s an elixir of old-school masculinity.

The name Rive Gauche pays homage to the Left Bank of the Seine, that romantic, chic and bohemian Paris of the 20th century, full of cafés and artists. Two sprays and you get it: it’s not just a perfume, it’s a state of mind, confidence and discreet sensuality that screams luxury and self-care. If you’re looking for the scent of a well-done shave, with warm shaving foam and aftershave cream, this is it. It’s a fresh, soapy fougère that becomes creamy and addictive as it dries, with classic patchouli but blended brilliantly with lavender, oakmoss and geranium. It’s a safe haven between elegance and beauty, perfect for romantic dates. Very long-lasting and versatile. Curiously, Tom Ford poured his soul into Beau de Jour. Unfortunately discontinued, why? For flanker 35 or the Y series that doesn’t reach its ankle? If you find it, dive headfirst into this aromatic sea. An absolute masterpiece.
