Dating from 1957, Огни Москвы (Moscow Lights) Eau de Cologne by Новая Заря (The New Dawn) is a chypre for Women and Men. The nose behind it is Alexey Pogudkin.
White floral, musky and animalic in balance, it shows aldehydic, mossy, powdery, green and fresh facets.
Aldehydes, jasmine and lily shape the top. The effect is tidy and luminous rather than sweet, with aldehydes drawing out the white flowers.
White flowers and lily continue at the heart, set against galbanum, incense, labdanum and resins. The galbanum keeps things green, the incense-resin block adds shadow.
Musk, oakmoss, civet and leather form the base. Oakmoss supplies the chypre character, while civet and leather leave a dry, faintly feral trail.
Taken together, the Eau de Cologne reflects the mid-twentieth-century chypre formula: a floral-aldehydic lift, a resinous core, and a bed of musk, moss and leather.
It will suit devotees of traditional unisex chypres, lovers of jasmine and lilies on oakmoss, and anyone tracing Soviet-era perfumery who enjoys leather with a light animalic touch.
