  Among Italy’s semi-obscure and budget-friendly fragrances stands Nazareno Gabrielli pour homme. It smells vintage, complex, and initially difficult to endure. The modern version is cheaper and more wearable, but loses potency and longevity compared to the original, which is brutal and deep. This one retains much of the base scent, drier and sharper for the first hour than Dolce & Gabbana (from which it borrows elements without being a copy), featuring a mimosa that adds a greasy touch. The tobacco is bitter, while the sandalwood fades before a very old-school vetiver. It is woody, spicy, and herbal; by the end, I find myself intrigued by such a natural blend. It’s pure and unadulterated: unforgiving at first, then transforming completely, far removed from modern perfumery. A totem in the desert that remains alive, with devoted fans and worth the price as it smells better than it costs, among Italians who didn’t sell their souls like Gucci, Armani, or Versace and stuck to their style. Do not buy it if you dislike classics or if you care more about the name than the contents.
