Descripción
New York Amber by Bond No 9 is an oriental woody fragrance from the olfactive family, created by perfumer Alberto Morillas and launched in 2011. This composition, designed for both men and women, unfolds a scent pyramid where the top notes feature citrus and spices that give way to a floral and woody heart, culminating in a warm and persistent base of amber and noble woods.

I destroyed the YSL M7 in another review, but I forgot this one also has oud, so my hopes for that note remain firm, although here the king is amber. I have a good memory of trying it in store: it’s strong, but not dizzying.
I have no complaints about this fragrance; it delivers on its promise as an ‘amber’. It smells of amber, not rose as some say (though a hint is noticeable). It’s a potent blend of amber, oud, and myrrh that lasts all day. The flowers, led by saffron, sit in the background. The benzoin gives it strength and projection for the first four hours, then softens to reveal the amber and woods (oud and a sweet yet dry sandalwood). I don’t detect the pepper. It’s wood, wood, and more sweet wood slathered with a viscous amber pomade. The longevity is brutal: I sprayed it at 4:45 pm and it was still detectable the next day at 10 am; with a single reapplication, it returned with force. Even after showering at night, I could still smell it. The trail must be enormous for most. It gives me a sensation of being in an ancient monastery, inner stillness, security, and serenity, a true ‘rejoicing’. If you concentrate, the chords bloom and there, indeed, are the delicate roses. Although not oriental, the amber is quite so, similar to the Indian or Chinese style, but mixed with oud, nutmeg, and saffron it takes on a more ‘woody-ambery’ and universal character. I think it suits women better, though it is truly unisex. It’s not for everyone, nor commercial, so it may cause controversy. I haven’t been to NY, but from what I know of my sister who adores it, I believe it represents her history, buildings, parks, and art. It was a blind buy based on ingredients and it has me happy.
I’ve been wearing a sample all afternoon, and while it’s a cracker, it doesn’t smell like that classic amber I’m addicted to, such as Ambre 114 or Blue Amber. Here, the amber is more animalic, thanks to the oud, and to my nose, it bears a strong resemblance to Tellus by Liquides Imaginaires. It’s a good fragrance, nothing invasive, settles down with time, and is perfect for the evening or chilly days.
