Dior Privé Santal Noir is my absolute favourite from the Private Collection: a woody floral that opens with a sweet, warm rose, slightly flat, paired with an incredibly creamy sandalwood and musk. Over time, the rose mellows and the sandalwood takes over, revealing its milky, creamy, dry facets with a spicy hint. At the same time, it smells warm, like amber. The blend of that soft rose with the sandalwood is excellent, but what makes it unique is the ambrette musk: clean and slightly dark, while the sandalwood adds a mysterious, elegant twist. Although it’s not overly complex due to its few notes, it smells different from any commercial fragrance and surprises almost everyone who tries it. On the skin, it lasts around 10 hours with a brutal projection for the first 6, and if you wear it on your clothes, the scent can linger even after two washes.

I’m lucky enough to own Oud Rosewood and Tobacolor from the same line, plus a sample of Santal Noir that was gifted to me. In my opinion, Santal Noir resembles Tobacolor more than Oud Rosewood, though it’s not identical to either. To me, Oud Rosewood smells more like Tuscan Leather, while Santal Noir is like Tobacolor but with the huge difference of sandalwood, which gives it a much creamier touch. Whereas Tobacolor is both sweet and spicy, Santal Noir is a sweet tobacco with leather, all wrapped in a creamy sandalwood. If you enjoy perfumes like Tuscan Leather, Tobacco Vanille, ADP Santal, ADP Ambre or Spice Bomb Extreme, buy blind – it won’t disappoint.

Whereas Tobacolor is both sweet and spicy, Santal Noir is a sweet tobacco with a leather hint, all wrapped in a creamy sandalwood. If you enjoy perfumes like Tuscan Leather, Tobacco Vanille, ADP Santal, ADP Ambre or Spice Bomb Extreme, buy blind – no mistake.

Santal is truly an exquisite fragrance. If you’ve already smelled Oud Rosewood, you’ll remember it. Mind you, it’s not identical. The key difference is the animalic touch; if you have the Oud, you’ll notice that after a few hours, that animalic side fades, leaving a fruity, creamy, and much more approachable scent. Something like that is the path of Santal Noir, only with a few notes that change it slightly. If I had to describe it quickly, I’d say: ‘it’s an Oud Rosewood without the animalic edge’. Is it worth trying? I’m sure it is. Is it worth buying? In my opinion, yes. The only complication is sourcing it, hehe.
