  It’s the perfect example of that seventies trend that bled into the eighties: perfumes smelling of aluminium and iodine. 7e Sens de Rykiel goes beyond merely being animalic; while some creations from that era are dirty and narcotic, this smells of dust, bromine and poison. It has a musty sweetness that makes you think of sad, ugly things. It’s a dizzying scent, like those shirts you forget in a wardrobe and, months later, smell unbearable dust. Rykiel isn’t powdery; it’s dusty. I simply cannot stand this family. The notes that hit me hardest are a dry, herbaceous amber, with memories of artichokes and boiled swede in an aluminium pot, that iodine aura I can’t stand alongside the moss and patchouli. It has an animalic air, but zero eroticism; I smell acidic, petrol-like castoreum, nothing like the honeyed civet. It’s in the same line as Cartier’s Must and Lancaster’s Concentrate: artichokes, iodine and sweet cements, with chemical poison undertones. It’s horrified me, but not surprisingly. PS. Today it’s no more expensive than other discontinued scents, but it stopped being made long ago, and since Rykiel is less well-known, I imagine they had small production runs. PS II. I’d love for Fragrantica to expand its options beyond ‘like’ or ‘love’; I need one called ‘I hate it’ for perfumes like this. It seems like an improvement. I use their profile as a notes notebook and I don’t understand why this perfume is in the same category as Opium, which I dislike but can tolerate.
