Witness is that forgotten gem by Jacques Bogart that I stumbled upon yesterday in the town of my youth. What’s fascinating is how perfectly the name fits: it witnessed my student years (1991-95), my train rides, the nights out at the disco, and my quinceañeras. I never thought there was anything interesting in that perfume shop until I spotted a Samsara and decided to look for it. It’s a woody oriental with a chaotic opening reminiscent of Lapidus, then it releases honey, carnation, and a cinnamon softened with benzoin and amber, all wrapped in incense that provides a sense of shelter. By the end, sandalwood and patchouli take the reins. After waiting 25 years on the shelf, it’s finally with me to witness what’s to come.

Among Bofifa’s treasures, this Witness has left me impressed by its quality and evolution on the skin, with a fantastic dry-down. At first, it seems slightly confusing, as if all the notes are trying to emerge at once, but from the heart note onwards, it unfolds its full beauty and power. It’s a pearl: the honey and citrus create an incredibly warm, green, and woody atmosphere. An absolute-level aromatic kaleidoscope that makes you appreciate how well perfume was crafted back in its day. Simply fantastic, many thanks, friend.

Although I’m a Bogart fan, the first time I wore Witness, I didn’t get it; it felt overwhelming, perhaps due to the heat or my mood. But after reflecting and trying it several times, I made a 180-degree turn. The opening concentrates all the notes with a citrus accent, then it smells like walking through a forest rubbing the resin of the trees. It’s the best woody fragrance I’ve tried, with natural sweet tones of wild honey and cinnamon stick, plus a persistent smoky note. Sometimes it sounds like a barbershop with a clean musk. While it’s robust, its projection is moderate, which amplifies its infinite nuances. In longevity, it’s a beast. An evocative, complex, and accomplished work. A lost treasure. Rating: 10/10.

At first, the opening was strong due to the aldehydes and non-acidic citrus with hyssop and basil, but the heart is where it gets interesting: non-pungent cinnamon with jasmine, geranium, and soft honey. The base is a long-lasting classic of patchouli, amber, sandalwood, and vanilla, with a musk that isn’t generic or overly sweet. The 90s woods are soft but carry that charm of the era. It’s discontinued, and now I see it for formal situations—not too elegant but very interesting for its handling of cinnamon. It has a quality that current houses would envy. The trail is moderate but sustained for over twelve hours. It’s not just for winter; with its florals and vegetals, it holds up in warmer weather too. If you like 90s fragrances like Safari or Jazz, this deserves consideration.
