Curiously, when I bought it, it arrived with a decant of Woody Oud. Comparing the two convinced me I had made the right choice, as the Woody feels sweeter and isn’t my style. It is a masculine, elegant and sophisticated scent, perfect for formal occasions. Pure, hard wood of a sublime category, with a bottle and box that many niche brands would kill for. It is intimate; you can only smell it at close range, which reinforces that elegant character; nothing as crude as suffocating people or engaging in an olfactory battle (which is why I use one or two sprays with Kouros). The longevity on my skin is average, about six hours. I liked it so much that I will definitely buy the original from Thameen, not only because I want the same thing boosted in quality, but because the Crafted version (the one I have) unfortunately contains lilial.
Very dapper. Smells medicinal, slightly fresh and elegant.
Incredibly good. I own Thameen’s Carved Oud and, allowing for the nuances of negligible differences, it’s an excellent inspiration at a ridiculously low cost. If you like the Oud Wood DNA but want something more elegant, don’t hesitate. The packaging is bloody brilliant.
Years ago, I was gifted decants of Tom Ford’s Oud Wood and fell in love, but its price is insane. I know that base note well. This Arab jewel plays in the same league, shares the DNA, but that is where the similarity ends. I do not know Thameen’s Carved Oud to compare, but I did find a parallel: the opening recalls TF, but the dry-down surprises and confuses. It is like a more bearable Encre Noire by Lalique. I say this with bitterness, because although it is a masterpiece, it gave me an allergy; for me, it was too smoky and suffocating. The Zaffiro Crafted Oud, sharing cypress, vetiver, woods and musk, does recall Encre Noire in its dry-down but smells much better. On the downside, the performance is well below other Arab brands I own; it does not project much and the longevity is moderate to low. It is not for garnering compliments; it is very dark and muted, yet elegant without being ostentatious. It is neither easy to buy blind nor suitable for common tastes. It is not youthful; I see it for gentlemen aged forty and above. I paid forty dollars for the Maison Alhambra bottle (and the presentation that makes you dream of a Xerjoff); it is a treat for collectors. It is surely available cheaper in other markets, such as mine, Venezuela.

The oud and sandal are rich, with a good trail, though it does not surpass Zaffiro Regale, which is a beast in longevity. It smells to me exactly like Maison Alhambra’s Woody Oud. It lasts about 4-6 hours and then sits softly on the skin. For price and quality, I give it a 9 out of 10. 😀
