Oriental jewels in the West. I walked into Zara burdened by my troubles and left smiling under the rain without an umbrella. I usually avoid the perfume aisle (the flesh is weak), but this time I gave in. My gaze caught a dishevelled garment printed with pink roses, hiding a treasure: Rose Elixir. I thought, ‘A sign!’. I found the tester, tried it, went into ecstasy and bought it. The pink-saffron combo, with Arab touches, has a balsamic cedar stem and spicy vanilla that culminates in an exquisite resin flower. It’s an oriental labdanum: warm, animalic, spiced, ambered, woody and sweetly musky, with a forward-thinking, bitter-sweet and mentholated twist. It evokes a bunch of rigid, fragile flowers covered in frost, climbing their stems to flee the cold and crashing against skin stolen from Ra. They say labdanum heals spiritual wounds and awakens inner heat; I didn’t care that it rained on my skin in this January.
