Alessandro Gualtieri is an Italian perfumer known for his avant-garde approach to creating fragrances. He learned perfumery through a combination of formal studies in Germany and external lessons from an Italian expatriate he met in a bar. He built his reputation working with fashion brands such as Fendi, Versace, Helmut Lang and Diesel before founding his own line of perfumes, Nasomatto, in Amsterdam.
What sets Gualtieri apart from other perfumers is that he does not publish lists of ingredients for his fragrances. Instead, he describes the inspiration behind each scent, allowing the line to communicate first the creative essence of each fragrance and leaving the real notes for the user to contemplate over time.
Some of Gualtieri’s notable fragrances include Duro, his interpretation of masculinity, with the aim of enhancing all manifestations of strength. Another popular fragrance is Black Afgano, inspired by the aroma of hashish and known for its smoky, earthy scent.
In addition to his work with Nasomatto, Gualtieri founded Orto Parisi, a line that explores the animal side of humanity. He also founded Maria Lux with his wife, the Dutch designer Lilian Driessen.
