Another Rogue that leaves me perplexed: I expected my new guru but I’m still searching. Derviche is a chaos of opposites. At first, bitter floral, inaccessible, with that camphorated-aggressive animal touch that just doesn’t fit. Then it becomes cosy and oriental, with an incense that barely touches the vanilla and a smoky hint. It never quite harmonises, only creating strange facets. It’s almost an animal gourmand that I only like after two hours, when the smoky vanilla takes over. I like the base, but it’s not for me.

Third Rogue test with samples. Derviche kicks off with tobacco, leather and tonka bean (or coumarin) despite them not being on the list. It also smells of civet at the start, that dirty note that makes you scratch your forearm for not being able to stop sniffing it :P. After 45 minutes, the sweetness of a delicious vanilla and an elegant labdanum emerge. On my skin it lasts about three hours. Afterwards, it settles, projection drops and the civet disappears (curious, because in others with civet it lasts the whole journey). From the third hour onwards, it reminds me of Zara’s Unexpected Fresh Spicy. The similarity is only at the end; the opening and ingredient quality are in a different league. It lasts about six hours in total, although the last hour is skin-scent only. I loved it and it has made Zara’s Tobacco Collection deserve a place of honour; any of the three compares well with many niche fragrances.
