Beside Church Bells, this is the least interesting offering from the brand. Fingers crossed they can establish a foothold; right now they seem far too expensive for what they deliver and remain largely unknown. Summer Sunset is lovely, closer to Church Bells but with more body. It doesn’t aim for lightness but rather evokes a summer trapped in memory, nostalgic and unattainable. It conjures up a heatwave of the nineties in the Mediterranean, with notes of neroli, Fructis hair cream and sunscreen, yet with a more refined dry-down. It reminds me of Maison Matiné (crystalline figs), the legendary Giorgio Beverly Hills (wafer biscuit), and Shiseido’s Ginza (undeclared rice water). If it were a moment: post-shower, freshly styled, with damp hair, at a beach house before dinner with the family at twelve years old. The Spice Girls are at their peak; everything is simple, there’s a fairground and ice cream, the uncles arrive in white bermudas with loose hair, maximally tanned, with an August flower-bed air. Lasting power is moderate.
