Bois des Iles by Chanel is an oriental woody fragrance for women. Launched in 2007, the nose behind this composition is Ernest Beaux. The top notes are aldehydes, coriander, neroli, peach, bergamot and mandarin; the heart notes are ylang-ylang, iris, iris root, jasmine, rose, lilac and lily of the valley; the base notes are sandalwood, amber, benzoin, tonka bean, opoponax, vanilla, musk and vetiver.

A perfume definitely from another era, created by the same perfumer as Chanel No 5, with an aldehydic opening typical of our grandmothers’ fragrances. If you like No 5, you’ll adore it; if not, perhaps not. I don’t get on well with aldehydic openings except for Dior’s Dune and this Chanel beauty. It is feminine, soft, alluring and refined, transporting you to the theatre or cobblestone colonial streets. If you wish to travel back in time, try the Les Exclusifs line by Chanel (or some from Dior). If you dream of crochet dresses, walls full of art or black and white photographs, simply step into Bois des Îles.
Wearing this perfume is like travelling back to the 1920s… elegant, different, classic at first, but then it becomes bold, sophisticated and woody with powdery touches… Another masterpiece from Chanel.
The quintessential feminine Egoïste. A bath of aldehydes over a base of sparkling and exquisite sandalwood.
I follow Blackened’s opinion: we could say it is the ‘mother’ of Egoïste. I haven’t checked if they share many notes, but there is one key: sandalwood. In both, it is very noticeable, very refined and rich. Bois des Îles is classic, elegant and suggestive, quite complex with many facets. My nose hasn’t distinguished them all yet, but I note a very aldehydic and woody phase. It is a little more feminine than other Les Exclusifs, but it has a touch that could be unisex. The best thing is that you try it yourselves; it is very complex.

It takes me to the Belle Époque, the 1920s with French modistes and high society, to rationalist architecture and Art Deco, to Freudian liberalism and the distorted art of Picasso, Dalí and Klee, without forgetting Kafka and Joyce. It is exquisite, refined and ultra-feminine. Its aldehydic scent, the lily of the valley and sandalwood transport me.
