  If you adore jasmine, you might like it, but it’s a rather dull fragrance that smells like a dozen overused formulas for delicate jasmine. It opens with a burst of jasmine and orange blossom, blended with ylang-ylang’s velvety sweetness to recreate a young, smooth, and green neroli before it turns sour. It’s not unpleasant, but it barely registers. In the heart, the indole-free white flowers mellow and sweeten with a warm, old-fashioned musk. It’s a sweet jasmine, not cloying, with hints of cream and sophisticated floral notes—cheerful and natural. In my mind, it’s a sprig of heliotrope, greener and crisper than jasmine, which, as it matures, takes on fecal nuances. If you catch the trail on clothes or the cap, it recalls Cabotine, inspired by Tendre Poison. It smells decent if you love jasmine, feels like a fair quality, but nothing to make you lose your mind, and offers very little for €2 per ml. At that price, a perfume should deliver more—a new composition, a twist, a fantasy explosion… Grand Bal could easily cost fifty euros. I won’t say twenty, as it has more quality than a minor-label jasmine, but nothing to shout about since you’ve smelled this in two hundred places. The name is well-chosen, evoking a grand marionette or Venetian ball, yet everything is light and diffuse, lacking any baroque flair. P.S.: It bears no resemblance to J’Adore; it lacks much fruit skin. It’s more like a distant cousin of Tendre Poison, more elegant and refined. P.S. II: Average trail, good longevity. P.S.
