If you can get past the first three minutes, you’ll fall in love. At first, it smells odd and strong, a scent that doesn’t sit well with me initially, but it quickly changes direction. It smells of old-fashioned makeup, a wonderful iris with vanilla; you apply it and can’t stop smelling your wrists. I think it’s an original fragrance; I’ve never smelled anything like it. It’s extremely feminine and creamy, making you feel special. Without a doubt, it will be one of my next purchases.
On first sniff, I thought of Marie Antoinette: pale face dusted with rice powder, rosy cheeks, voluminous dresses, and wigs. It has an old-world, elegant air, like makeup sweetened with vanilla. It’s a different proposition from my usual tastes but delicious. It’s a powder-attar, creamy, and sweet, with moderate projection and trail.
Lipstick on is pure femininity without the need for flowers; the bottle itself embodies the word ‘WOMAN’. The opening is powdery: iris, heliotrope, and rice powder, hard to define because the initial blast can be suffocating, but within five minutes, beauty emerges. As the heart unfolds, it’s an ode to coquetry, dreamy powders, and glamour. I detect cherry, strong tonka bean, majestic iris, and vanilla that evokes old-fashioned makeup. Wearing it is like travelling back in time, sitting in a vanity from the 1920s or 30s with ivory brushes and glass bottles. It’s nostalgia and soft femininity, nothing strident, beauty without fuss. I love that it breaks the mould, but I regret its short longevity, lasting only 3 to 4 hours with an intimate trail. Just enough, I hope it continues to refresh my memories and my subtle side.
Lipstick on is all femininity without the need to be a flower-filled perfume; it perfectly encapsulates the word ‘WOMAN’. Its opening is powdery: iris, heliotrope, and rice powder, difficult to identify precisely because the initial blast is suffocating, but after five minutes, when the powders settle, beauty emerges. As the heart notes unfold, it’s an ode to coquetry, dreamy powders, and glamour. I catch a hint of cherry, tonka bean, majestic iris, and the vanilla that gives it that old-fashioned makeup touch. Wearing it is like travelling to the past, sitting at a three-mirror vanity with ivory brushes, glass bottles, lipstick, and talcum powder. The beauty lies in that bath of nostalgia and soft, discreet femininity, nothing strident. Lipstick on is beauty without fuss, worthy of the 1920s and 30s. I love that it steps out of the scheme; I like sensations, but I regret its short longevity, lasting between 3 and 4 hours with a moderate, intimate trail, just right for the idea it conveys. I hope it continues to refresh my memories and strengthen my subtle, feminine side.
Lipstick on. I was dying to try this perfume. I tested it first in summer with a decant from Scentsplit and it didn’t do anything for me. Now that it’s cold here, I absolutely love it, but after four hours it just smells of vanilla and a low iris. I think I didn’t give it the right season. I still crave it because the weather here is just brilliant; neither too cold nor too hot does it fill me up.
Lipstick on. I’d been wanting to try it for ages and finally did with a decant from scentsplit. It didn’t quite convince me in summer, but with the cold weather here now, I’ve loved it. After four hours, only vanilla and a very subtle iris remain. I think it’s not for this season; my city has extreme temperatures and it doesn’t fill the room in heat or cold. I’m left wanting to own the real thing.
I tested it on skin and paper, and honestly, I adored it; a real treasure, super feminine. Wearing jeans and trainers, I felt unworthy of such an elegant and luxurious fragrance. It smells like those swan-talc powders my grandmothers used back in the day. Beautiful, I want it soon in my collection.
I bought this blind, hoping for a scent of rice powder and lipstick bars, and it turned out well. But you need to wear it all day to get to know it. As soon as I spray it on my hand, my husband says it smells like Dior Homme; I don’t notice the makeup and feel disappointed, but once I apply it behind my ears, it’s wonderful! I start to smell the rice powder and lipstick bars with a touch of makeup. It’s only noticeable there, behind the little ears. If you like rice powder, try Blanc Violet by Histories of Parfums instead; it has more projection, or Moulin Rouge from the same house, which smells of eye and lip liners and is twenty times more intense. This one, however, is more for spring and summer on hot days. And if you want to smell like liquid face makeup, your perfume is Putain des Palaces by Etat Libre d’Orange.

It was recommended by a perfume expert friend; I bought it at a very good price, I did not know it and had not seen any reviews, but I fell in love. It is a pity to know it is discontinued. Its opening causes me sneezes, I must clarify, I suppose it is the heliotrope, but more so as time passes since application, it becomes a fragrance dream. The iris is so lovely and I do not feel it as powdery; rather, I feel it as a tender and delicate fragrance. I have tried it in extreme heat where I live; the climate is hot and humid, and it did not have much projection or trail, but it does not bother me to re-apply it and put a little on my clothes to feel it; we shall have to experiment in cold climates. Update: I used it in hard cold weather and it projected much better; I could perceive it for moments or catch bursts of the fragrance. Truly, it is love at first sniff, so much so that I bought my own refill.
It is so beautiful. For me, it is only ‘lipstick’ in the opening; just like an expensive lipstick, with a slight sweetness. After about twenty minutes, a rice-like sensation appears, as when you start washing cereal and it feels both moist and powdery; very tender, I feel like eating it. In the end, it leaves a soft, slightly creamy, and somewhat woody vanilla. It is refined without being pretentious. It does not have a great trail, but it can be perceived when you move. Longevity 3-4 hours; close to the skin, another 4 hours.

Thanks to it, I became interested in perfumes again a few years ago; it was such a peculiar, familiar, and surprising scent. I felt compelled to smell it when I read ‘lipstick’ and was curious to know if it would smell like the old lipstick sticks my mother used when I was little, and… wow, it smelled exactly like that. It is undoubtedly the fragrance that makes me feel my best, apart from liking its scent in all its facets: top, heart, and base notes; I adore it because I can still smell it days after spraying it. In love. I already have three full bottles in reserve since it was discontinued, and every time I see a good offer, it is impossible not to take it; I want to keep it forever.
When I first smelled this perfume, I was fascinated, but I found it poor in longevity and very expensive (it was one of the first exclusive perfumes I tried), so I set it aside. A couple of years ago, when I became more serious about perfumes, I passed it by because I was late to the sales. And when I finally started working and could afford it, it was no longer available. I have tried more perfumes of this style (Lipstick Fever, Moulin Rouge, Étoile d’Une Nuit, Eternity Intense, Valentino Donna, Narciso Rouge… and today I even ordered a sample of Lipstick Rose, *fingers crossed*) searching for my ideal lipstick scent, and I have concluded that although most of them are nice, my true love was my sweet ‘Lipstick On’. In my memories of it survives the most enchanting powdery sweetness, my grandmother’s feminine cosmetics from her handbag, black and white period films. I remember the scent of a divine, waxy, glossy red lipstick. Balsamic, powdery, and very vanilla-forward. I remember liking it because it reminded me of ‘Poison Girl’ (my favourite back then). Perhaps if I tried Lipstick On now, I would not like it as much or see it differently, but it makes me furious that I had the opportunity to buy it and didn’t. In short, things happen. If any house of dupes manages to create a decent replica of this scent, I would be happy, because I doubt M. Margiela will bring it back and I have already given up. The moral of the story: it is better to regret buying something (with a clear head, of course) than not to buy it and then regret it later.
At first, I absolutely loved it, but the longevity was poor and the price too steep, so I put it aside. A few years later, when I was finally looking for more perfumes, I arrived too late at the sales, and by the time I could afford it, it was gone. I’ve tried others of this style (Lipstick Fever, Moulin Rouge, Étoile d’Une Nuit, Eternity Intense, Valentino Donna, Narciso Rouge…) and today I even ordered a sample of Lipstick Rose, praying, in search of my perfect lipstick scent. The conclusion is that while I like the others, my ideal was this sweet ‘Lipstick On’. In my memories lives that powdery, charming sweetness, my grandmother’s cosmetics and black-and-white films. I remember the scent of red, waxy, divine lipstick: balsamic, dusty, and very vanilla. I liked it because it reminded me of ‘Poison Girl’, my favourite from that era. Perhaps I don’t like it as much now or see it differently, but it makes me angry to have had the chance and not have bought it. Anyway, things happen. If any house makes a decent dupe, I’d be delighted, because I doubt M. Margiela will bring it back and I’ve already given up. The moral is: it’s better to regret buying something with your head than not buying it and then lamenting it later.
I saw it on the Palermo-inspired perfumes website and clicked through to read reviews from other Fragrantica lovers…
Lipstick on in my first impressions; it is simply perfect. This is what a lipstick should smell like; what a masterpiece. The best replica I have found. I feel as though I have just applied my favourite lipstick and feel powerful. It is perfect.
It is highly enjoyable in all its phases, although its performance is fleeting. I feel it lacks character. It is true, it recalls old lipsticks, but that scent fades within a couple of hours with poor projection, leaving a vanilla reminiscent of Mon Guerlain or Lavandes Trianon. I would describe it as a sweet, muted iris-vanilla. It is a beautiful and cosy scent, but nothing more; I think I will only buy 10 ml for personal enjoyment.
It smells exactly like MAC lipsticks, that vanilla which lingers on the lips after application; there’s no more to it, I just love it. Plus, it has an impressive trail.
How on earth do they manage to capture the essence of a lipstick in a fragrance? ‘In Love’ is an understatement. In my opinion, it suits everything from a summer party night to a quiet sunny day in winter.
What a lovely scent; that lipstick is crafted to perfection. Paired with Narciso Rouge, it is simply exquisite.
